Project Overview:

Bechtel is building a semiconductor manufacturing plant in New Albany, Ohio. We are partnering with the North America Building Trades Unions and suppliers to create several thousand new jobs and work with local education organizations to implement new training programs that will support the future talent pipeline. Bechtel Manufacturing & Technology, Inc. offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the semiconductor manufacturing, electric vehicle, and data center markets. Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, the M&T global business unit also includes colleagues working in Arizona, Ohio, Texas, India, and additional project locations around the world.

Job Summary:

The Rigging Superintendent is responsible for supervising and directing operations within the cranes & rigging discipline. Supervises and directs cranes & rigging craft professional, subordinate supervisors, and others, as assigned. #LI-BH1

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide ES&H leadership to personnel assigned to their department. This includes preparation and implementation of safety procedures and leading Bechtel and subcontractor safety meetings.
  • Ensure that all crane and rigging operations comply with applicable Bechtel procedures, OSHA standards, and federal, state, county, and local regulations, customer and project-specific requirements.
  • Engages in development of relevant Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs)
  • Manage all site cranes during operation per processes and procedure requirements in regard to safe usage, site relocation, assembly/disassembly of telescopic RT-AT and lattice boom crawler cranes, safe rig up and safe raising-lowering of long boom cranes, proper set up, proper usage and site ground bearing conditions regarding build out of earth and timber crane pads.
  • May manage site COE's (crane operator examiners) and crane operator qualification program including crane operator certifications, state licenses and medical certificates verifications.
  • Ensures that assigned personnel are properly qualified for their task (e.g., signaling cranes); that they are trained, competent and aware of their responsibilities, and are complying with all applicable standards, requirements, and safe practices.
  • Inspect site for unsafe conditions and practices and take appropriate corrective action to correct breaches.
  • Coordinate safety training and enforce safe work practices at all times in conjunction with the Environmental Safety and Health.
  • Review and approve subcontractor equipment/personnel mobilization and demobilization.
  • Plan the manpower and equipment required to execute the job.
  • Monitor the activities of craft professionals to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.
  • Interface with Labor/Industrial Relations for craft recruitment and training programs.
  • Perform employee reviews and identify training and development opportunities for subordinate cranes & rigging personnel.
  • Review craft time records using established automated tools.
  • Prepare reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecasts.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for implementing relevant corporate project policies, procedures, and instructions within their assigned area(s) of operation.
  • Prepare material requisitions for tools and consumables and coordinate through Procurement to obtain these materials.
  • Act as the manager of rigging equipment and hardware including forecasting, inventory and rigging lofts
  • Reviews weekly scheduled work plans with discipline superintendents to ensure the project has the rigging resources available with the proper qualifications to support the planned work scopes.
  • Ensures that scheduling concerns and constraints are identified and elevated to the construction management team.
  • Supervises and coordinates daily with direct hire and subcontract representatives on rigging construction activities.
  • Possesses responsibility for the safe execution of rigging activities in accordance with applicable SWPPs and legislative codes/standards.
  • Coordinates and ensures availability of cranes, SPMTs, or other HH/HL equipment and rigging hardware required to execute lifting and transportation activities.
  • Provides direction to Rigging/Heavy Haul General Foremen and Foreman as necessary to support rigging/heavy haul initiatives across the project.
  • Ensures the rigging team members assigned to each task have the skill sets necessary to execute the work safely and effectively


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8 -10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience


Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience commensurate with the type of work to be undertaken.
  • Experience in oil, gas, refinery, petrochemical, minerals processing or power generating station construction is preferred.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to read and interpret crane manufactures operator's manual and load charts
  • Experienced in safe use and inspection of rigging equipment and hardware
  • Ability to develop 3-week look-ahead schedule


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified rigger/signal person. NCCCO, NCCCER or equivalent
  • Certified crane operator, NCCCO, NCCER or equivalent
  • Qualified OSHA crane inspector
  • Qualified crane A/D Director


Additional Information

Work includes field inspections and the physical ability to conduct field inspections which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces and working in small or confined spaces. Some lifting may be required. Must have the ability to walk into and out of the project (enter/egress). Must be able to use appropriate standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e. harness, life vest, lift buckets, etc.).
