Responsibilities

  • Participate in annual corrosion program reviews, evaluating and providing feedback on reports.
  • Assist field corrosion supervisors in troubleshooting complex corrosion issues and formulating cost-effective solutions.

What We Are Looking For

The responsibilities for this role include providing corrosion engineering, technical support, direction and oversight to the Company corrosion control program for the Natural Gas Pipeline business unit, primarily supporting Division 1 (EPNG and Mojave pipelines in CA, NM, AZ and TX) including policy and procedure development and technical review and support of corrosion related issues and tasks. This position is part of KM's Operations Support Group (OSG) Corrosion Control department that includes 11 corrosion engineers/specialists reporting to the Manager-Corrosion Control, supporting corrosion control activities across all of Kinder Morgan. This position reports to the Manager-Corrosion Control with dotted-line responsibilities to Division 1 Operations Management.

What You Will Do

  • Support Division 1 corrosion personnel in establishing corrosion control priorities including alignment between operational tasks and corporate philosophy.
  • Facilitate consistent application of Company corrosion control procedures across Division 1 natural gas pipeline and storage assets.
  • Assist in the technical development and mentoring of operations-based corrosion control personnel through routine interactions and providing technical review and support.
  • Support Corrosion Supervisors and Technicians as a subject-matter expert on KM standards and procedures, including O&M, construction standards, and material requirements related to corrosion control.
  • Direct and support the development and maintenance of company corrosion control standards and develop, maintain and conduct training for internal corrosion policies and procedures including O&M manual, design, construction, operator qualification program, and new training course materials.
  • Participate in annual corrosion program reviews including reviewing and provide feedback on the review report.
  • Provide technical expertise and assistance in problem-solving to the field-based corrosion supervisors and corrosion technicians for complex corrosion control issues such as stray current, remedial actions, AC mitigation, atmospheric and underground coatings, electrical isolation, above-ground surveys such as close-interval survey, DCVG and ACVG, design for specialized or complex cathodic protection systems, and internal corrosion monitoring programs.
  • Review and provide feedback on remedial action mitigation plans resulting from in-line inspections, cathodic protection surveys, close interval surveys, and internal corrosion inspections to assist in assuring development of cost-effective solutions consistent with corporate philosophy.
  • Provide support for the technical problems of corrosion control for operations, project engineering and engineering design.
  • Review and provide feedback on scopes and specifications as needed for complex projects such as close-interval surveys and other field surveys including remedial actions, stray current testing and mitigation, data interpretation and engineering analysis, cathodic protection design, internal corrosion mitigation system design and monitoring including coupons and solid/liquid/gas sampling analyses, and programs for monitoring, assessment and mitigation of complex corrosion mechanisms such as SCC, high-temperature corrosion and microbiological influenced corrosion.
  • Make informed decisions involving corrosion mitigation requirements, such as atmospheric coatings, cathodic protection, and internal corrosion monitoring technologies such as coupons and liquid and solid sampling, and develop recommendations on corrosion mitigation based on results from inline inspection.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise where needed in communications with DOT and state regulatory agencies and in corporate audits.
  • Perform corrosion control failure analysis to determine root-cause working in conjunction with company metallurgists and laboratory personnel and develop remediation plans.

What You Need

Education
  • Minimum of BS in an Engineering or Science discipline, optimally with at least 5 years of in-depth corrosion control experience and working knowledge of field operations for natural gas pipelines, but other levels of experience may be considered.

Competencies/Skills
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently perform job description requirements including those identified above.
  • Established ability to lead and influence others in implementing corrosion control programs.
  • A demonstrated history of excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Position requires working with various management levels and departments to achieve reliability results. Accomplished public speaking skills in formal situations for large audiences. Must have excellent writing skills with the ability to write concise technical reports, specifications and work instructions.
  • Ability and willingness to understand and implement all company job related processes, procedures, guidelines and best practices.
  • This position requires a high level of analytical skills. Familiarity with root cause analysis for problem resolution techniques is a plus. Ability to make informed decisions involving pipeline remediation/repair, coating systems, budgets, and broad program initiatives for corrosion control.
  • The successful individual must be a self-starter and be able to work without direct supervision.
  • Should have proven project management skills: must be able to prioritize multiple projects for different internal customers simultaneously, exceptional planning and scheduling abilities, and good communications skills. The position also requires the ability to serve as a project team member and as a leader.
  • Must be able to complete tasks and assignments in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. The role includes a continual commitment to safety and the environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively train, aid in development, and mentor corrosion control personnel.
  • Possess advanced computer skills, familiar with integrated data development and analysis. Familiarity with American Innovations PCS/CPDM is a plus.
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of applicable Federal and State pipeline safety regulations, including past experience with DOT regulations including Title 49 CFR Part 192 Subpart I - Requirements for Corrosion Control Management and associated industry organization standards such as AMPP (formerly NACE International), SSPC, ASME, etc.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • This position will be based in the Kinder Morgan offices located at 5151 East Broadway Blvd Suite 1680 Tucson, AZ 85711 or at 7815 S 48th Street Phoenix AZ 85044.

Work Conditions
  • Must be willing and able to work in an office environment.
  • Occasional travel to other field or corporate locations may be required depending on nature of ongoing work activities (approximately 10 to 25%).
  • Availability for work outside normal business hours.
  • Must be willing and able to carry a cell phone and respond as needed in a timely fashion.
  • Subject to background check and Company drug testing program.
  • Extended periods of sitting may be required for administrative activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in managing all phases of corrosion control and demonstrated continuing responsibility implementing corrosion control programs in the gas or liquids pipeline industry including but not limited to cathodic protection, coatings and internal corrosion.
  • Knowledge of various types of below-grade and atmospheric coatings, their properties and application standards (past and present).
  • Knowledge of general natural gas transmission, gathering, and storage pipeline operations standards, practices and procedures.
  • Experience writing and revising standards or procedures.
  • Knowledge of DOT pipeline integrity regulations 49 CFR Part 192, Subpart O - Gas Transmission Pipeline Integrity
  • Detailed understanding of pipeline integrity assessment methods including pressure testing, inline inspection and Direct Assessment.
  • Knowledge of non-destructive testing methods used for pipelines, including corrosion assessment, ultrasonic thickness measurement and magnetic particle inspection.
  • Proficient with American Innovations PCS software.
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agencies such as PHMSA or related state agencies.
  • Higher-level related industry certifications such as AMPP/NACE Specialist, this position will be providing technical support to highly experienced and qualified corrosion technicians and corrosion supervisors.
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office applications.
