Description The Opportunity
Borderless AI is looking for an experienced, hands-on Controller to build our accounting and finance function from the ground up as we scale. This is a foundational hire for a Series B/C startup: you'll take direct ownership of financial reporting, tax, transfer pricing policies, accounts payable and receivable, and accounting policies, standing up the systems, processes, and controls a fast-growing, global business needs. This role is a great fit for someone who has built an accounting or finance function from 0 to 1 before, thrives in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment, and enjoys building order and rigor out of complexity.
Roles & Responsibilities
Build and lead Borderless AI's accounting and finance function from the ground up, establishing the systems, processes, and internal controls needed to support the company's growth.
Own financial reporting: prepare accurate, timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, and manage the month-end and year-end close process.
Own tax: manage corporate tax compliance and filings across jurisdictions, coordinate with external tax advisors, and ensure Borderless AI meets its federal, provincial/state, and international tax obligations.
Develop, implement, and maintain transfer pricing policies that support the company's global operations and ensure compliance with cross-border tax requirements.
Own accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely and accurate vendor payments, customer invoicing, and collections.
Own cash management and forecasting - tracking burn rate, running runway analysis, and building cash flow forecasts to keep leadership ahead of the company's cash position.
Design, document, and maintain accounting policies and procedures that scale with the business and support audit readiness.
Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning to inform strategic decision-making.
Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, banking partners, and other finance-related vendors.
Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements across the jurisdictions in which Borderless AI operates.
Build, mentor, and eventually lead a growing accounting and finance team as the company scales.
Qualifications
8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including experience at a Series B/C or similar growth-stage startup.
Proven track record of building an accounting/finance function from 0 to 1 - designing processes, systems, and controls from scratch.
Deep expertise across financial reporting, tax, transfer pricing, and accounts payable/receivable.
CPA designation (or equivalent) required.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and/or IFRS; experience with multi-jurisdiction or international accounting is a plus given Borderless AI's global operations.
Experience developing and implementing accounting policies in a fast-growing, high-ambiguity environment.
Excellent organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
High degree of ownership, integrity, and attention to detail.
Willingness to work in person, five days a week, at Borderless AI's Toronto HQ.
