Job Description

Facilities Maintenance Operations provides a broad portfolio of labor-based services, including primary building maintenance, landscape, fire safety, custodial, and event support, to Harvard schools and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with regulatory requirements and customer-determined standards.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:
  • Troubleshoot, service and repair all types of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) control systems including but not limited to pneumatic, electric, electronic, DDC (Direct Digital Control), and general heating and cooling systems.
  • Installs, modifies, and repairs all types of boilers, heating and cooling systems, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Fabricates and installs high and low-pressure piping and ducting systems. Interprets mechanical plans and prints and updates, as necessary.
  • Provides responsive customer support in all phases of building maintenance and operations.
  • Assists and advises customers on maintenance solutions and provides follow-up on progress and status of work.
  • Performs other core skills of the trades and related duties as required.
  • May be assigned to work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under the guidance and direction of the Area Supervisor and/or Working Foreperson.
  • Must supply a complete set of hand tools.
  • Must be willing to work in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials.
  • Required to properly wear a uniform and maintain a professional image at all times.

Working Conditions:
  • Emergency Status Designation: Critical Operations Personnel (required to provide on-site support during emergency situations as determined by management).

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and lift and transport piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs. with others.
  • May use chain falls and come along for heavier lifting.
  • Must be able to push and pull heavy loads as listed.
  • Must be able to stoop and bend for long periods of time and work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods, routinely walk to and from various buildings carrying tools, equipment, and other essentials to the job site.
  • Ability to work alone and climb multiple sets of stairs, work of ladders, staging, lifts, and related service equipment.


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Five years of experience in HVAC control systems installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and related work.
  • Must have at least two years of relevant experience operating, troubleshooting, and repairing Siemens DDC (Direct Digital Control) control systems.
  • Strong knowledge of airflow and IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) issues required.
  • Must possess a current Refrigeration Technician or acceptable MASS. state trade license.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:
  • CFC Refrigeration Transition and Recovery Certificate Preferred.
  • DDC Control System Training and experience required.
  • Experience operating direct digital controls diagnostic equipment.
  • Proficient keyboard skills and familiarity with MS Windows-based computing applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed plans, specifications, operating manuals and other written materials associated with this trade.
  • Effectively communicate with peers and customers.
  • A current address and telephone number must be provided as an ongoing condition of employment.

Certificates and Licenses:
  • Must possess a current Refrigeration Technician or acceptable MASS. state trade license.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • CFC Refrigeration Transition and Recovery Certificate Preferred.
  • DDC Control System Training and experience required.

Standard Hours/Schedule:
  • 40 hours per week
  • Sunday: Off
  • Monday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
  • Tuesday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
  • Wednesday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
  • Thursday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
  • Friday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
  • Saturday: Off

Compensation Range/Rate (including Shift Differential if applicable):
  • $52.34/hour
