Position Overview:BWXT Advanced Technologies (AT) is seeking a Computer Vision / Machine Learning R&D Engineer with an interest in applications of computer vision to complex manufacturing processes. Your skills in machine vision, analytics, machine learning, sensors or robotics will support the research and development of a wide range of nuclear products for space applications, clean power, and propulsion.
Location: This position is based on-site in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office.
Your Day to Day as a Computer Vision / Machine Learning R&D Engineer: - Develop physics informed and constrained machine learning models that are integrated with machine vision classifiers, to identify and classify manufacturing defects and process variation.
- Work on image classifiers, object detectors, video understanding models, multi-modal classifiers, etc.
- Work to develop and improve sensor systems and hardware based directly on model performance.
- Work with engineering teams to implement model pipelines and deploy the services at scale.
- Collaborate with data analysts to understand and find data patterns.
Required Qualifications:- A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, computer science, data science, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience is required.
- Must have experience in computer vision and machine learning, with a strong focus on deep generative models (e.g., GANs, VAEs, diffusion models).
- Must have experience in signal processing with demonstrated knowledge and application of signal processing techniques.
- Must be a self-starter and comfortable supporting multiple teams, systems and developing products.
- Travel (30-40%) domestic and international is required.
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $103,000.00
The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $70,000.00 and $103,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
