POSITION OVERVIEW
Volatus Aerospace is seeking a Computer Vision Engineer to develop and deploy vision and image-processing capabilities for UAVs or relevant systems.
The role includes scene recognition, visual targeting, tracking, and visual positioning. Working with hardware, software, controls, and test teams, the engineer will integrate sensors and develop reliable perception capabilities from initial data collection through deployment and validation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Scene recognition: Develop algorithms to recognize operational areas, objects, and surrounding features, including recognition without dedicated visual markers.
- Visual targeting: Detect, locate, and track targets, and estimate their relative position, orientation, and motion.
- Dynamic reference positioning: Develop capabilities to establish and update visual references, including dynamic home or recovery locations.
- Moving-target tracking: Maintain tracking through movement, changing viewpoints, partial obstruction, and temporary loss of visibility.
- Vision and sensor integration: Integrate cameras and supporting sensors, ensuring accurate calibration, synchronization, and data processing.
- Environmental performance: Improve perception reliability across changes in lighting, weather, backgrounds, vibration, and motion.
- Data and model development: Collect and manage datasets, train and evaluate models, and refine algorithms using representative operational data.
- Localization and sensor fusion: Combine visual observations with other sensor inputs to improve positioning, motion estimation, and tracking.
- Onboard processing: Optimize algorithms and models for real-time operation within available computing, memory, and power resources.
- Control and mission integration: Interface perception outputs with flight controllers or relevant systems, including confidence reporting and handling of invalid data or lost targets.
- Testing and validation: Assess accuracy, reliability, and latency through recorded-data analysis, simulation, and practical testing.
- Technical documentation: Maintain traceable datasets, model versions, calibration records, test results, and operating limitations.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related discipline. A relevant Master's degree or PhD is an asset.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in computer vision, image processing, machine learning, or robotics.
- Strong knowledge of computer vision, image processing, visual tracking, spatial estimation, and sensor fusion.
- Proficiency in Python, OpenCV, and PyTorch or TensorFlow, with experience in dataset preparation, model training, and validation.
- Experience with camera calibration, sensor interfaces, and Linux-based software development.
- Familiarity with C/C++, embedded computing, real-time video processing, and model optimization.
- Knowledge of techniques for improving model generalization, assessing confidence, and detecting perception failures.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and technical writing skills.
- Experience with visual perception or navigation for UAVs or relevant systems is an asset.
- Familiarity with PX4, ArduPilot, Veronte, or comparable flight control systems, and experience interfacing sensor and vision-derived outputs through MAVLink or other supported protocols, are assets
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably assigned by the Company from time to time
HOURS OF WORK AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The position is an onsite role, and the Employee is required to perform their duties primarily at the Company's designated workplace, as directed by the Company.
- The standard work schedule consists of forty (40) hours per week, typically performed Monday to Friday, subject to operational requirements.
- From time to time, the Employee may be required to maintain reasonable flexibility in working hours to support operational needs, time-sensitive activities, or business priorities.
