Full Job Description
The Communications Director will report to the Chief Marketing Officer and shape how we communicate with stakeholders, our boards and committees, media and the broader community. You'll craft major organizational messages, develop editorial content, support executive and corporate communications, and help ensure our voice is consistent across every platform and audience.

This is more than a communications role. It's an opportunity to help shape how Charlotte understands Uptown and South End. You'll tell stories that celebrate neighborhoods and small businesses, explain complex initiatives, support civic leadership, and communicate the vision of an organization working to make Uptown and South End more vibrant, inclusive, economically strong, and memorable for everyone.

A note about AI: We believe technology should amplify creativity, not replace it. We're looking for someone who is excited to explore new tools, including AI, while bringing the judgment, curiosity, and originality that great communications require.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Partner with the CMO and SVP of Communications to steward CCCP's written voice across all brands and communications.
  • Support and at times lead executive communications, including speeches, talking points, board materials, annual reports, award submissions, op-eds, stakeholder communications, and other major organizational writing.
  • In partnership with CMO, lead development of editorial content through a combination of original writing and collaboration with freelance writers, including business profiles, neighborhood stories, itineraries, website copy, email copy, and feature articles.
  • Develop and manage an editorial calendar that supports organizational priorities and marketing initiatives.
  • Direct email communications strategy, which includes newsletters for Uptown, South End, and other initiatives as needed.
  • Collaborate with the CMO on campaign messaging, media materials, and proactive storytelling opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Social Media Manager to adapt editorial content across social channels.
  • Partner with Brand Manager on development of press releases, media pitches, background materials, and event communications.
  • Review written content across the organization to ensure consistency, quality, tone, and brand alignment.
  • Explore and implement AI and other technologies that improve workflows while maintaining quality, originality, and authenticity of voice.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who combines exceptional writing ability with sound judgment, curiosity, creativity, and a collaborative spirit.

The ideal candidate will be:
  • An outstanding writer and editor who can adapt their voice for a wide variety of audiences and formats.
  • A natural storyteller who enjoys finding compelling narratives in everyday people, places, organizations, and ideas.
  • Equally comfortable writing a CEO speech, a website feature, a media pitch, or an email newsletter.
  • Intellectually curious and able to ask thoughtful questions and quickly understand complex topics and translate them into clear, compelling communications.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Proactive and always looking for new stories and opportunities to communicate the impact of our work.
  • A thoughtful collaborator who enjoys working across departments and building relationships throughout the organization and community.
  • Comfortable balancing long-term planning with the flexibility to respond quickly when priorities change.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Approximately 5 to 10 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, public relations, content strategy, or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills across multiple formats.
  • Experience developing executive communications and organizational messaging.
  • Experience creating editorial content for digital channels, websites, newsletters, or publications.
  • Experience collaborating with media or supporting media relations efforts is preferred.
  • Experience managing freelance writers or external communications partners is a plus.
  • Experience incorporating AI and other emerging technologies into communications workflows is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with the candidate's qualifications. CCCP offers a generous benefits package, including health, dental, vision, short-term, long-term, and life insurance with a flexible spending option, a 401K retirement program and parking.
