Full Job Description
Application deadline: Sep 6, 2026

What you will do: As a Hardware Development Engineer III on the Storage Server Hardware Engineering team, you will own the architecture, validation, and production quality of our storage server platforms and AWS-specific storage hardware components. You will drive ODM engagement from design review through mass production, define test flow architecture and yield strategy, and own pass/fail criteria for storage server systems. You will partner with cross-functional teams (firmware, mechanical, thermal, supply chain) to deliver storage platforms from NPI through end-of-life.

This is a fast-paced, intellectually demanding role. You will operate as the technical owner for storage system hardware - setting the bar on signal integrity, power delivery, and storage subsystem architecture. You will have a direct impact on fleet reliability, cost, and performance at massive scale.

Key job responsibilities

Own storage server system architecture and hardware design decisions from concept through mass production and fleet deployment

Drive ODM oversight model: lead schematic reviews, layout reviews, and design quality gates for storage server platforms

Define and own test flow architecture, yield strategy, and pass/fail criteria for storage hardware validation and manufacturing

Lead NPI execution for new storage server platforms - coordinate EVT/DVT/PVT milestones, drive issue resolution, and ensure production readiness

Partner with firmware, mechanical, thermal, and supply chain teams to deliver integrated storage systems meeting performance, cost, and reliability targets

Own production quality and fleet reliability for storage server hardware - drive root cause analysis and corrective actions for field issues

Define and improve validation methodologies, design standards, and manufacturing processes for storage server hardware

Mentor and develop peer engineers; perform HDE technical assessments

A day in the life

You will start your day reviewing production yield data and field reliability metrics for your storage server platforms. You may join a design review with your ODM partner to evaluate a schematic change for a next-generation storage system, catching a signal integrity concern before it becomes a board spin. After lunch you might define pass/fail criteria for a new NVMe SSD qualification, then pivot to a cross-functional sync where you drive resolution of a thermal issue discovered during DVT. Youll close the day mentoring a junior engineer on failure analysis methodology for a fleet issue. You operate with high ownership and bias for action - finding paths forward through ambiguity and making trade-offs between short-term schedule pressure and long-term fleet quality.

About the team

The AWS Storage Server Hardware Engineering team designs and delivers the storage platforms that power Amazon S3, EBS, and other critical AWS storage services. We own our platforms cradle-to-grave: from architecture definition through NPI, manufacturing, fleet deployment, and end-of-life. Our engineers operate as technical owners - not hands-off program managers - with deep accountability for the quality and performance of the hardware we ship at massive scale.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field

- Experience developing test strategies and plans for complex hardware/software systems or systems of systems

- 5+ years of hardware design and validation experience with server, storage, or networking systems

- Experience with ODM/OEM engagement including schematic review, layout review, and production quality oversight

- Experience with storage subsystems (SSD/HDD interfaces, NVMe, SAS/SATA, PCIe) or high-speed serial interfaces

- Experience troubleshooting hardware issues using oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers, and JTAG debug tools

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Masters degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field

- Experience with server motherboard architecture, power delivery, and signal integrity analysis

- Experience leading NPI programs from EVT through mass production with ODM partners

- Experience with storage server fleet operations, yield management, and manufacturing process optimization

- Experience in Linux-based hardware debug and system-level integration testing

- Familiarity with reliability engineering (HALT, HASS, accelerated life testing) for server-class hardware

- Experience developing or improving hardware design standards and review processes
