Sr Manager, Operations Excellence and PMO

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

Demonstrates recognized expertise in project leadership and Supply chain practice while also maintaining expertise in a functional area sufficient to carry out project leadership duties. Assumes responsibility, with minimal supervision, for projects which are typically medium to large in scale with moderate risk and impact to the Division/Business/Staff unit. Possesses expertise in project leadership that is recognized within multiple Divisions and/or within the company. Serves as mentor to existing and potential future team leaders within the business unit, Business/ Staff management, and stakeholders. Maintains expertise in a functional area sufficient to carry out project leadership duties and to effectively leverage a network of company and industry resources. Reports to Director of Distribution Improvement & Global Standards in 3M Global Logistics.

As a Sr Manager, Operations Excellence and PMO in Global Logistics you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

Managing Cross-Functional Supply Chain Projects: Lead and oversee complex, cross-functional supply chain/ Logistics improvement initiatives, ensuring alignment with business objectives and successful project outcomes.

Distribution Center Project Management: Drive project execution within 3M distribution centers, focusing on operational efficiency, automation, and process optimization to enhance overall productivity and service levels.

Lead PMO and Standardization: Develop, implement, and maintain project management standards, methodologies, and best practices across the organization to ensure consistency and high-quality project delivery.

Simultaneously leads multiple cross-functional project teams in Supply Chain to successful completion of projects that are typically medium to large in scale with moderate risk and impact to the Division/Business/Staff unit. Representative complexity of a typical individual project would be < 12 key deliverables (1), 12-24months in duration, with 10-20 team members. Alternatively, may lead a single high risk / high opportunity project. Collaborates with Program Manager, business management, stakeholders, and project team members to refine project scope, and oversees development of complete project plans which may require modification of existing Work Breakdown Structures (2). Participates in project planning with project client and typically serves as a facilitator. Generates communication plans and executes them across the Business/Staff unit to ensure project support. Leverages global resources across the Supply Chain/ Logistics as well as typically across several disciplines, to achieve timely completion of project deliverables. Has ability to partner with peers in outside organizations and may serve as primary representative of company to external contacts. Makes decisions with business leaders on forecasting the budget. Controls the approved project budget. May oversee and/or authorize payments to vendors. (60%)

Possesses expertise in project leadership that is recognized within the multiple Divisions and/or within the company. Demonstrates a high level of competency in project leadership at an individual project level. Encourages the use of the Project Management process and associated tools within the project team and Business/Staff unit. Maintains knowledge of external activities in project leadership process and tool development and applies learnings to ongoing projects. Actively identifies and incorporates improvements in Project Leadership tools and techniques. (15%)

Serves as a mentor/coach to existing and potential future team leaders within the business unit, Business/Staff management, and stakeholders. Provides training on existing project leadership tools and methodologies to multiple teams, typically exempt and non-exempt employees across disciplines. May present to the external project leadership community, typically with active participation in a local professional organization. Provides direct task-level guidance to team members as necessary as well as overall project guidance to multiple teams to maintain focus on common objectives. May provide some guidance in terms of performance and development. The work of these employees is connected by project goals but is diversified so coordinating activities is a significant part of this job. Performs other duties as assigned. (15%)

Maintains expertise in a functional area (technical, marketing, sales, etc.) sufficient to carry out project leadership duties and to effectively leverage a network of company and industry resources. Updates self and co-workers on trends relevant to the projects and maintains current knowledge of safety regulations and policies in all areas. Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, Industrial engineering, business or related field
  • PMP certification or Lean Six Sigma related Project Management certification
  • Ten (10+) years of experience in supply chain, distribution, or operations excellence in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Five (5+) years of experience in project leadership or operations excellence

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Certifications in CSCP, CLTD, SC Pro or APICS
  • Experience with implementing Automation in Fulfillment/ Distribution centers
  • Transformation management experience
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Demonstrated ability to analyze complex systems and processes, identify inefficiencies, and develop innovative engineering solutions to drive improvements.
  • Communication and Leadership: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively present ideas and influence decision-making. Strong leadership and teamwork abilities, with a proven track record of successfully managing cross-functional projects.

  • Hybrid Eligible (Job Duties allow for some remote work but require travel to the Dekalb facility at least 4 days per week)
