About the Opportunity

The Business Development Engineer will develop and grow Labconco's glove box, isolator, and Class III enclosure product portfolio through a combination of engineering innovation, technical expertise, and business acumen.

This position leads new product development initiatives from concept through commercialization while supporting custom applications, customer-specific solutions, and strategic growth opportunities. Working closely with Product Management, Sales, Manufacturing, Marketing, and customers, this role serves as both a technical expert and business partner, translating market needs into innovative products and engineered solutions.

This is a hands-on role that combines product development, customer engagement, project management, and portfolio growth responsibilities.

What You'll Do
  • Design, prototype, test, and develop new glove box, isolator, and Class III enclosure products from initial concept through market launch and production.
  • Lead product development projects, including requirements gathering, design reviews, validation testing, and commercialization activities.
  • Develop custom-engineered solutions and product modifications that meet customer-specific application requirements.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, cost analyses, and business case evaluations for new product concepts and enhancements.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and product documentation using Solid Edge.
  • Coordinate cross-functional activities involving Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service.
  • Evaluate materials, components, suppliers, and manufacturing processes to improve product performance, quality, and cost.
  • Conduct product testing, design validation, root cause investigations, and failure mode analysis.
  • Support regulatory compliance, product safety requirements, certifications, and applicable industry standards.
  • Manage engineering change activity and maintain design documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Gather and analyze customer feedback, market trends, and competitive information to identify opportunities for product improvements and new product development.
  • Provide technical support and product expertise to customers, dealers, sales representatives, and internal teams.
  • Participate in customer visits, trade shows, product demonstrations, and application reviews as needed.
  • Assist with portfolio growth initiatives, strategic planning, and the identification of new business opportunities within glove box and isolator markets.
  • Monitor product performance metrics and recommend enhancements that improve customer satisfaction and business results.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned by management.


Requirements

What You'll Bring
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline required.
  • Five or more years of product development, product engineering, design engineering, or related experience preferred.
  • Experience with new product development processes, design validation, and project management preferred.
  • Experience with glove boxes, containment equipment, laboratory equipment, industrial equipment, or engineered-to-order products preferred.
Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in Solid Edge CAD software and engineering drawing development.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, manufacturing methods, and engineering documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to analyze technical, operational, and market data to support sound engineering and business decisions.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude with the ability to apply engineering calculations, statistics, and analytical reasoning.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel as needed. Some travel may require a valid driver's license.

Work Schedule and Environment

This position is expected to work onsite. Normal working hours are generally based on an eight-hour workday within operating hours of 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, unless another schedule is established with the manager. Additional hours may occasionally be required based on business needs.
