The Opportunity

The AVP, Reinsurance and Investment Management provides executive level leadership and oversight to a team responsible for the development and management of highly competitive life, health, and annuity products while focusing on protecting the financial strength of the organization and building long-term value. They will partner with key stakeholders to launch new products and manage existing ones. They will also be responsible for developing, managing, and administering the reinsurance program for assigned life, health, and annuity products for USAA's life insurance companies.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, or Charlotte, NC. Relocation assistance is available for this position.

What you'll do:
  • Accountable for defining, developing, evaluating, and overseeing the implementation of reinsurance models and strategies designed to optimize revenue, market share, brand positioning, long-term profits, and value for members for assigned life, health, and annuity products.
  • Partners with General Managers, Finance, Investment Management, Underwriting, and other key stakeholders to correctly position product portfolio and establish pricing programs aligned with product/sales strategy and revenue recognition requirements.
  • Holds shared accountability for the development and analysis of pricing models and projections to ensure competitive pricing/market position and sustainable returns.
  • Leads the development and implementation of investment strategies to improve product performance and asset liability management (ALM).
  • Drives the development and implementation of reinsurance strategies to manage capital, mitigate risk, and/or improve pricing leverage; builds, grows, and maintains reinsurance partnerships; and negotiates and executes reinsurance transactions.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert on counterparty risk assessment and risk mitigation.
  • Oversees the management and administration of reinsurance agreements for the entire life cycle.
  • Provides oversight of the reinsurance admin system, billing and reporting to reinsurance companies, financial reporting, and risk metric reporting.
  • Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.


What you have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance, or quantitative field; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
  • 10 years of progressive actuarial experience in two or more life actuarial functions, to include developing strategies, managing major initiatives, and effectively delivering results within a complex matrix environment.
  • 6 years of people leadership experience in building, managing and/or developing high-performing teams.
  • Strong knowledge of risk/compliance management framework and policies.
  • Knowledge of pricing tools, techniques, and methods; ability to assess analytical and pricing models using statistical principles.
  • Demonstrated expertise in reinsurance structures, investment strategy, and financial risk management.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable life, health, and annuity laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to audiences of all levels.
  • Fellow, Society of Actuaries and Member, American Academy of Actuaries required.

  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.


Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $224,250- $403,650

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
