Salary range: The posted UC Salary scales set the minimum pay at the appointment as determined by appointment type and, if applicable, rank and/or step. The base pay range for this position is $150,000 - $350,000. Salary is negotiated annually. Position description

The Department of Medicine at University of California, San Diego, is committed to academic excellence within its faculty, staff and student body.

We are actively recruiting to fill the tenured position of Chief, Division of Genomics and Precision Medicine .

Divisional faculty receive over $14 million in grant funding each year, including $10 million from the NIH. The Division has innovative basic, translational, and computational research programs in many areas of population-based and disease-specific genomics, development of widely used analytic tools, and applications of machine learning to genomic data.

We are seeking a visionary leader who can sustain and grow all facets of the Division's missions as well as foster a collaborative and collegial work environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Leadership and Vision

• Provide visionary leadership to the Division of Genomics and Precision Medicine, setting strategic goals and objectives that align with the mission and vision of UC San Diego.
• Foster a collaborative environment that encourages innovation, excellence, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

2. Research and Innovation

• Drive cutting-edge research in human genomics (modern population genetics) and precision medicine, securing external funding from federal, state, and private sources.
• Promote the translation of research findings into clinical practice by partnering with clinical colleagues.
• Facilitate collaborations with other divisions, departments, and institutions to advance the fields of genomics and precision medicine.

3. Education and Mentorship

• Develop and lead educational programs in human genomics and precision medicine for graduate students, medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty.
• Mentor and support the professional development of faculty, researchers, and trainees within the Division.
• Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

4. Administration and Management

• Manage the Division's financial resources, including budget planning and allocation.
• Recruit, retain, and evaluate faculty and staff.
• Represent the Division in departmental, institutional, and external meetings and committees.

The appointment will be based on the candidate's background and experience. Series will include 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In-Residence (with secured extramural funding) or 100% Ladder Rank.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Candidates must have a PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, or a related field.

Candidates must have 5 + years of experience leading a clinical, translational, and/or basic research program, along with an independent, extramurally funded research program (e.g., NIH R01 or similar).

Candidates with an MD/PhD with any clinical responsibilities must be board certified or board eligible in their specialty and must either hold, or be eligible for, a California medical license or equivalent certification as determined by the Medical Board of California.
