Position Overview:

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) - Primary Casualty Claims is responsible for leading and managing the organization's primary casualty claims unit. The AVP will oversee a team of six claims professionals, ensuring high-quality claims management, adherence to best practices, and the achievement of timely and equitable claims resolutions. The role is also responsible for driving process improvements, supporting strategic initiatives, and providing technical expertise across a broad range of primary casualty claims.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of six primary casualty claims professionals, providing guidance, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities.
  • Oversee all aspects of the primary casualty claims process, ensuring claims are handled proactively, efficiently, accurately, and in alignment with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and authorize claim settlements exceeding individual adjuster authority and ensure appropriate reserving practices are followed.
  • Analyze loss trends and provide regular management reports highlighting claim outcomes, litigation management, large loss activity, and performance indicators.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, risk management, legal, and other departments to ensure seamless claims handling and to support company goals.
  • Develop and implement best practices for claims handling and assist in the creation and updating of claims policies and procedures.
  • Handle escalated or complex claims directly, as appropriate, and represent the company in mediations, settlement conferences, and as a liaison with reinsurers and brokers.
  • Promote a customer-focused culture, ensuring exceptional service to policyholders, claimants, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, company standards, and industry best practices.
  • Contribute to strategic planning initiatives, including technology enhancements and other process improvements.
  • Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new team members.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Juris Doctor (JD), advanced degree in a related field, or professional designations (ex: CPCU) preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible claims experience within casualty insurance with a strong emphasis on general liability.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.
  • A data driven mindset that looks to use claim management tools (PowerBI, etc.) to manage a book of claims proactively.
  • Previous leadership/management experience, including direct supervision of claims adjusters or examiners is preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of claims handling principles, legal and regulatory requirements, and industry trends.
  • Proven analytical, decision-making, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience with litigation management and complex, high-severity casualty claims.


For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in New York, Starr Insurance Companies is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets: experience and training: licensure and certifications: and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $125,000 - $150,000
