Description The
Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of
Assistant Professor in Geomatics Engineering. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2027 or a mutually agreed date.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong record of high-quality research and publications; the potential to establish a successful externally funded research program and achieve international recognition within a reasonable period following appointment; the ability to attract, mentor, and develop outstanding trainees, students, and future researchers; the ability to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses relevant to the position; excellent written and oral communication skills; and a demonstrated commitment to advancing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Engineering.
The selected candidate must demonstrate alignment with the strategic plans of the University of Calgary's Ahead of Tomorrow ( https://ucalgary.ca/about/ahead-of-tomorrow ), Schulich Momentum ( https://schulich.ucalgary.ca/about/schulich-momentum ), and Alberta Technology and Innovation Strategy 2.0 (https://open.alberta.ca/publications/alberta-technology-and-innovation-strategy-2) effectively supporting the specified strategic academic and research priorities.
The selected candidate must prioritize research efforts on the development of advanced multi-sensor systems and sensor-fusion technologies that enable autonomous and intelligent systems to perceive, localize, navigate, map, and interact reliably with their environments. Of particular interest are approaches that improve the accuracy, robustness, integrity, resilience, and continuity of positioning, navigation, perception, and spatial awareness in complex and challenging environments.
Examples include:
- Multi-sensor positioning, navigation, and perception integrating GNSS, inertial sensors, cameras, LiDAR, radar, wireless signals, and emerging sensing technologies;
- Multi-modal sensing and sensor-fusion architectures;
- Autonomous and connected vehicle systems;
- Airborne sensing and UAV systems, including navigation, mapping, perception, and onboard sensing;
- Robotic systems and intelligent automation;
- Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), mapping, and spatial awareness;
- Resilient navigation in GNSS-denied, degraded, or otherwise challenging environments; and
- Artificial intelligence and machine-learning methods for sensor modelling, perception, navigation, and multi-sensor fusion.
The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to develop and teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses in geomatics engineering. They should also be qualified to teach existing courses in the Geomatics Engineering curriculum ( https://calendar.ucalgary.ca/courses?page=1&cq=ENGO ) that align with the area of the position. In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to enhance existing course content and develop new courses, as appropriate, to address the evolving short- and long-term teaching needs of the Department and Faculty, particularly as they relate to the area of the position.
The successful applicant will actively contribute to teaching, curriculum development, graduate student supervision and mentoring, and are expected to provide service in support of the Department, School, University, and the Profession. As a member of the University of Calgary community, they will support, and contribute to, equity, diversity and inclusion and a positive working and learning environment.
The successful applicant will be expected to establish and sustain an externally funded research program of national and international significance. They should demonstrate strong potential to collaborate with and attract research support from government and industry partners in Calgary, across Alberta and Canada, and internationally. Through these partnerships, the successful applicant will be expected to advance their research program, promote knowledge translation and technology development, and provide leadership in innovation within the area of the position.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have earned a doctoral degree by the date of their appointment in geomatics engineering, or a closely related discipline. The successful candidate at the Assistant Professor level must demonstrate evidence of a track record of publications in high-quality journals, potential for securing external research funding, and effectiveness in teaching at the University level.
Candidates should have strong oral and written English communication skills. All candidates must be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
Housed within the Schulich School of Engineering, the Department of Geomatics Engineering supports Schulich Momentum with the development of new technologies and harnessing big data through the IoT, satellites, 3D imaging, remote sensors, and autonomous vehicles. The Department of Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary is one the leading geomatics engineering programs in the world, providing education, research, and public service in current and emerging areas. Our faculty and their research teams are leading major research funding (such as NSERC CREATE on multi-sensor systems) and are involved in designing, conducting, and managing activities relating to surveying, satellite positioning using GPS and other GNSS technologies, sensors technologies for smartphones and autonomous vehicles navigation, Earth observation systems, geospatial information systems, digital imaging systems, and IoT.
Interested individuals are encouraged to apply online via the 'Apply Now' link. Please be aware that the application process allows for only four attachments. Your application should contain the following in a single pdf document:
- A cover letter, including the name and contact information of three referees. The cover letter should address the eligibility for registration as a professional engineer with APEGA.
- Curriculum vitae with full list of publications.
- A statement of research interests, accomplishments, and vision that should demonstrate alignment with the Schulich School of Engineering and the University of Calgary research priorities (not to exceed two pages).
- A statement of teaching philosophy promoting student learning and success (not to exceed two pages). This can include information on teaching experience, training, and mentoring inside and outside the classroom at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels. The teaching statement must include a list of undergraduate and graduate courses offered in the Geomatics Engineering programs within the Schulich School of Engineering that the applicant is qualified to instruct.
