Assistant Hospital Manager - SAGE Redwood City

Take the next step in your veterinary leadership career at SAGE Redwood City. As an Assistant Hospital Manager, you'll play a key leadership role supporting the people, operations, and clinical teams across our fast-paced specialty and emergency veterinary hospital.

This position oversees Clinical Leads and teams across multiple departments, with a focus on developing strong leaders, optimizing staffing and hospital workflows, strengthening training and onboarding, and creating operational consistency across the hospital.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Veterinary Hospital Manager, Assistant Hospital Manager, Veterinary Operations Manager, Practice Manager, or people leader who enjoys developing teams, improving processes, and helping departments work effectively together.

In Your Day-to-Day, You Will
  • Coach, manage, and develop Clinical Leads and team leaders across multiple hospital departments, strengthening leadership capability, accountability, and employee engagement.
  • Oversee daily staffing and workforce needs, strategically allocating team members based on patient volume, department needs, call-outs, and staffing gaps.
  • Partner with department Leads to develop training plans, maintain SOPs, and strengthen clinical and operational skill development.
  • Create and oversee effective onboarding and training plans for new employees and monitor progress throughout the onboarding process.
  • Guide department scheduling practices, ensuring Leads proactively manage schedules, staffing coverage, attendance, and call-outs.
  • Serve as a consistent leadership resource for hospital teams, establishing clear expectations and supporting effective communication and accountability.
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, employee development, and corrective action when appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities to improve patient flow, hospital workflows, staffing efficiency, communication, and overall team performance.
  • Ensure required daily, weekly, and monthly accounting and administrative responsibilities are completed accurately and on time.
  • Partner closely with fellow Assistant Hospital Managers, the Hospital Director, Medical Director, and department leadership on process improvement and hospital-wide operational priorities.
  • Support change-management initiatives and help teams successfully navigate evolving hospital needs, processes, and priorities.

What You Bring
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible leadership, management, or veterinary operations experience.
  • Experience managing a facility, department, or complex operation with multiple direct reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, develop, motivate, and hold leaders and team members accountable.
  • Strong people management, staff development, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, interpersonal, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with workforce planning, employee scheduling, staffing optimization, training, onboarding, and performance management.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and lead effectively through organizational and operational change.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve processes, execute strategic initiatives, and develop high-performing teams.
  • Strong commitment to exceptional client service, employee experience, and patient care.
  • Schedule flexibility to support the needs of a hospital operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  • California Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) required within 60 days of hire or transfer. This requirement is waived for individuals holding a valid California RVT license.

Veterinary industry experience is strongly preferred, particularly within specialty veterinary medicine, emergency veterinary medicine, a 24/7 veterinary hospital, or another high-volume clinical environment. Previous experience overseeing supervisors, Clinical Leads, or multiple departments is highly desirable.
