OverviewResponsible to the Director of Engineering for the proper functioning of refrigeration, HVAC, systems, chillers plant, and painter and carpenter trades; directs all other Engineering functions or trades in the absence of the Director of Engineering.
Responsibilities- Assists Director and Administrative Manager in developing departmental policies and procedures as required, recommending and implementing revisions necessary for compliance with requirements of regulatory agencies
- Assists Director and Administrative Manager in developing annual budget for area of responsibility and in monitoring budget performance throughout the year
- Selects, hires and supervises employees in area of responsibility; initiates disciplinary action, including terminations; carries out annual performance appraisal of employees recommending promotions, raises, etc.
- Ensures adequate staff coverage by coordinating the vacation and holiday schedules; approves overtime as necessary and arranges coverage for absent staff. Maintains employee attendance records (including vacation time, sick days) and processes time cards for staff
- Investigates potential new equipment or upgrades to existing equipment and makes recommendations to Director; seeks to achieve maximum efficiency at lowest cost
- Assists the Administrative Manager in developing a daily and long-range work forecast system to establish priorities for the performance on work orders for repairs, construction and the preventive maintenance program
- Routinely checks on the mechanics at their assigned tasks to ensure safe and proper use of materials and methods; reviews all jobs for proper completion
- Coordinates activities of contractors during new construction or renovation to minimize disruption to hospital services and assure work is carried out according to hospital policies and procedures
- Develops and conducts training for the various crafts in the use of the latest engineering techniques
- Investigates and resolves problems or complaints; brings to the attention of the Director of Engineering any work that may impinge upon or obstruct other departments' operations
- Maintains a backlog control; schedules mechanical structural tests required by City, State and Federal agencies
- Works with Administrative Manager to develop and implement a thorough preventive maintenance program for area of responsibility
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards
- Adheres to the Medical Center's policy on Conflict of Interest, which includes completion of a Conflict of Interest Certificate on an annual basis
QualificationsEducation:Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
Current NYC Pressure Steam license and Refrigeration Machine Operator License required.
Experience:Minimum of 5 years' supervisory experience in a hospital environment or 10 years of industrial experience required, with extensive HVAC absorption and refrigerant plant operation experience.
