Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning (ML) Engineer - Subject Matter Expert (SME)

Location: Aurora, CO

Clearance: TS/SCI with Polygraph

Lead the Development of Mission-Ready AI/ML Capabilities

This role provides strategic guidance and technical leadership across the full AI/ML lifecycle, including data preparation, model development, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, governance, and continuous improvement.

The AI/ML Engineer SME will apply deep technical expertise across machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), generative AI, computer vision, predictive analytics, and emerging AI technologies to solve complex mission challenges. You will work closely with mission stakeholders, data scientists, software engineers, architects, and program leadership to translate operational requirements into secure, scalable, reliable, and production-ready AI-enabled capabilities.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the architecture, design, development, and implementation of enterprise and mission-focused AI/ML systems, platforms, and capabilities.
  • Develop, train, validate, optimize, and deploy machine learning and deep learning models.
  • Apply advanced AI techniques across areas such as NLP, generative AI, computer vision, predictive analytics, and related emerging technologies.
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies, frameworks, models, and methodologies to identify opportunities for improved mission effectiveness.
  • Establish and mature AI/ML engineering best practices, technical standards, model validation procedures, governance frameworks, and MLOps processes.
  • Provide technical oversight for data engineering, feature development, model performance monitoring, deployment pipelines, and AI/ML lifecycle management.
  • Design and guide scalable approaches for model deployment, inference, monitoring, retraining, versioning, and sustainment.
  • Advise program and organizational leadership on AI strategy, technology roadmaps, technical risk, architecture decisions, and responsible AI implementation.
  • Ensure AI/ML solutions align with applicable cybersecurity, data privacy, ethical AI, governance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional technical teams to integrate AI/ML capabilities into operational software platforms and mission systems.
  • Mentor engineers and data scientists while providing technical guidance, design reviews, and engineering oversight.
  • Serve as a primary technical authority and trusted advisor for AI/ML-related initiatives.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Ten (10) or more years of relevant experience in software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or a related technical field.
  • At least five (5) years of hands-on experience developing and deploying production AI/ML solutions.
  • Demonstrated expertise with modern AI/ML frameworks and tools such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Keras, MLflow, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience designing, deploying, or supporting AI/ML solutions within cloud-based environments and AI/ML platforms.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms, deep learning architectures, model evaluation, optimization, and production deployment.
  • Strong knowledge of software development methodologies, data architectures, APIs, distributed systems, and modern application development practices.
  • Demonstrated experience with MLOps, CI/CD for machine learning, model versioning, monitoring, lifecycle management, and governance.
  • Ability to translate complex operational or mission requirements into scalable technical solutions and actionable engineering strategies.
  • Strong technical leadership, communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.

Salary Range: $175,000.00 to $230,000.00

We recognize that a candidate's unique experience and qualifications may justify compensation beyond this range.
