Position Overview
We're redesigning how homes are designed and built, and we're looking for an Industrial Designer to join our ZURU Tech Housing team in Los Angeles. You'll design the building components that make up a ZURU home and write the rules that decide how they fit together, so one system can be designed, manufactured and built anywhere in the world. You're a systems thinker who sees past the single product to the whole, and you love turning complex requirements into simple, repeatable solutions
Position Impact
ZURU Tech is changing the way buildings are designed and built. Your work won't live in a single project: the products and design rules you create become parametric logic inside ZURU's software, generating components and configurations across every home the system builds. You'll work alongside design, engineering, manufacturing and software teams in Los Angeles, Italy, China and New Zealand, solving problems that sit right at the intersection of industrial design, architecture and manufacturing. Every simplification you make scales across the entire building system.
How you'll help us grow
• Design architectural products that balance aesthetics, functionality and user experience with how each component works inside the wider building system
• Develop scalable product systems and design rules that weigh design intent against building code and manufacturing constraints
• Take products from concept through production with engineering and manufacturing: develop, test, refine and solve challenges along the way
• Translate design intent into parametric logic that ZURU's software uses to generate products and configurations automatically
• Build and maintain design standards, CAD templates and product guidelines that keep the whole system consistent
• Sharpen the design-to-production process so ideas reach the factory faster and cleaner
• Simplify products and improve manufacturability: if a part can be simpler or more flexible, make it so
What Helps You Win Here
• Systems thinking: you naturally look beyond individual products to how components, rules and processes work together at scale
• Strong industrial design skills: a good grasp of aesthetics, functionality, materials, user experience, and how products are manufactured and assembled
• Proficiency with CAD/3D modeling and rendering tools: Rhino, Grasshopper or similar parametric tools are a plus
• A solid understanding of residential construction and building codes: you balance design intent with real-world technical and manufacturing requirements
• A cross-disciplinary problem solver: you communicate clearly with designers, engineers, software developers and manufacturers, and turn complex requirements into simple, practical solutions
