Location: Los Angeles, CA (on-site)
We're looking for a versatile, seasoned children's writer who can move easily between a toddler's picture book and a high schooler's history lesson. You've written for kids across the full age range. You spend real time around children, you know how they think and talk, and you know what makes them lean in and what makes them tune out. Ideally you also have a background in education, so you understand how learning works and how teachers actually use materials in the classroom and at home.
You'll write across every format we produce and bring a strong edutainment sensibility to all of it, whether you're scripting a five-minute cartoon or building a week of lesson plans.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Write scripts for animated and live-action video series and shows, from short-form episodes to longer narrative content
- Write children's books, including picture books, early readers, and middle-grade titles.
- Adapt your voice, vocabulary, pacing, and humor to the developmental stage of each audience, from pre-K through 12th grade
- Bring an edutainment approach to every format, making sure each piece is entertaining first and educational throughout
- Turn complex topics in history, civics, economics, character, and American values into stories and lessons that are accurate, engaging, and age-appropriate
- Work closely with producers, animators, editors, educators, and the creative team from concept through final delivery, taking notes well and revising efficiently
- Pitch original ideas for characters, series, books, and educational products.
- Research thoroughly and ensure factual accuracy across all content
- Meet production deadlines while managing multiple projects in different formats at once
Successful Candidates Will Possess:
- At least 5 years of professional writing experience for children, with published or produced work spanning a range of ages from pre-K through high school.
- A portfolio that shows range across formats, ideally including scripts, books, and educational materials
- Meaningful, ongoing time spent with children, whether as a parent, teacher, coach, counselor, tutor, camp leader, youth ministry leader, or similar
- A strong understanding of child development and how attention, comprehension, and humor change across age groups
- The ability to write with real comedic and storytelling chops: memorable characters, sharp dialogue, and a natural sense of rhythm and fun
- Comfort writing structured educational content with clear learning objectives that teachers and parents can pick up and use
- A quick study who can learn a house style and creative framework fast and apply it consistently
- Alignment with PragerU's mission and values, and enthusiasm for creating content that helps kids love America and understand the ideas that built it
- A degree, credential, or classroom experience in education, early childhood development, or a related field
- Experience writing to state or national academic standards
- Experience in animation writing, children's television, or kids' digital media
- Familiarity with homeschool families and the materials they rely on.
- Experience writing for a series bible or shared-universe characters
