About You

You are an experienced wildlife ecologist with in-depth knowledge of wildlife species and habitats of California, ideally those in the San Francisco Bay area, who enjoys balancing ecological expertise with project leadership, client service, and team collaboration. You strive for excellence in your everyday work and are interested in continually improving your scientific knowledge and collaborating with experts in other fields. You also have a curiosity about the natural world that includes ongoing learning about local wildlife ecology and your field of expertise. Your prior work has included surveying and evaluating local wildlife species and their habitats, preparing and contributing to environmental documents, and developing practical solutions to complex environmental challenges. You have a strong background in regulatory issues and solid technical writing skills.

You enjoy working across a variety of project types and collaborating with a variety of different team members that includes botanists, wetland scientists, GIS specialists, and more. Whether managing field surveys or preparing technical reports, you bring a thoughtful and solution-oriented approach to your work. You are comfortable managing projects and, working closely with clients and project team members to help move projects forward.

About the Job

We are currently seeking a wildlife ecologist with the ability tomanage a diverse range of projects and balance ecological expertise, project leadership, and client service. Working both independently and collaboratively, you will help guide projects through environmental review and implementation while contributing to ecological-based solutions.

As a project manager, you will oversee project delivery, coordinate with other team members, manage schedules and budgets, and help mentor and support our fun and capable team of wildlife ecology staff. You will also serve as a key contact for clients, agencies, and project partners and contribute to proposals, business development, and the continued growth of the Ecological Services and Design group.

Project work is primarily throughout the San Francisco Bay area and central California coast but occasionally will involve work in other parts of California (and possibly beyond). You would be based in a California location where you will make periodic visits to project sites.

This position may offer in-office, remote, or hybrid opportunities based on the candidate's location and the needs of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Preparing documentation related to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and California Environmental Policy Act (CEQA) for local, state, and federal agency projects, development projects located in sensitive areas, and projects with unique or challenging issues (e.g., related to wetlands, riparian setbacks, bird-safe design, and endangered or sensitive wildlife species)
• Performing federal and California Endangered Species Act consultations
• Providing compliance support, including making recommendations to minimize constraints on project activities; conducting pre-activity surveys; supporting compliance with project permits (including conducting surveys, environmental training sessions, and construction monitoring); and drafting reports for compliance documentation.
• Assessing biological constraints to proposed projects, including developing potential mitigation measures that may be necessary under CEQA/NEPA or conditions of anticipated permits or Endangered Species Act approvals
• Preparing mitigation and monitoring plans, in collaboration with our restoration ecologists to develop wildlife management and monitoring methods, success criteria, and avoidance and minimization measures

Requirements

Qualifications

Candidates should hold an M.S. or Ph.D. focusing on local wildlife species and habitats, or equivalent extensive local experience.

The ideal candidate will have:

• 4+ years of applicable professional experience (in addition to graduate degree), including 1+ year of management experience
• Prior experience authoring and editing technical reports, with demonstrated exceptional writing ability (e.g., via transcripts, personal references, or a submitted writing sample)
• Mastery of key project management skills including personal organization, ability to coordinate multiple projects, critical thinking skills, and team communications
• Experience with CEQA/NEPA documentation and consultations for the federal and California Endangered Species Acts
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• A desire to grow both intellectually and professionally
• Strong organizational abilities
• Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers

Compensation is commensurate with experience and internal equity, within the listed range. An employee's total compensation package includes annual salary; company-subsidized (employee and family) medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) participation with a company match of 1% to 4% of annual compensation; company-paid life and short- and long-term disability insurance; paid sick leave (10 days), paid vacation (12-15 days; determined by title at hire ), and paid holidays (9 days) per year; and the potential for an annual discretionary bonus based on company performance. Paid time off will be prorated to reflect part-time scheduled hours, if applicable.
