Full Job Description
We are seeking a VP, Head of Infrastructure, Sell Side Capital Markets to lead the platforms, networks, and teams that support principal and agency trading. This leader will set infrastructure strategy, deliver secure and resilient services, and ensure that latency-sensitive trading systems perform predictably under demanding market conditions. The role requires deep technical judgment, strong governance, enterprise-wide collaboration, and the executive presence to connect technology decisions to trading outcomes, client confidence, and risk.
Key responsibilities
• Set infrastructure strategy: Own the architecture, operating model, investment roadmap, and service levels for trading infrastructure across data centers, colocation facilities, networks, compute, storage, and cloud services where appropriate.
• Deliver low-latency performance: Measure and improve the path from market-data receipt through order submission and venue acknowledgment. Address tail latency, jitter, packet loss, throughput, and performance under peak load—not just average response times.
• Lead high-performance networking: Oversee exchange and venue connectivity, cross-connects, routing, multicast market data, bandwidth and burst capacity, time synchronization, and diagnosis of congestion or microbursts.
• Support distinct trading workflows: Ensure infrastructure meets principal trading needs for pricing, quoting, hedging, position visibility, and risk limits, as well as agency trading needs for client order intake, algorithmic execution, routing, timestamps, and complete order and execution records.
• Build resilience: Define recovery objectives, engineer failover, test disaster recovery under realistic conditions, and maintain readiness for market-open incidents, volume spikes, and venue disruptions.
• Lead operations and incidents: Establish observability, capacity planning, on-call practices, and disciplined incident response. Communicate business impact promptly and drive corrective actions that address root causes.
• Establish governance: Set standards and decision rights for architecture, service ownership, change management, access, security, vendor risk, and operational controls. Maintain transparent reporting on service health, exceptions, and risk.
• Work across the organization: Partner with trading desks, product and application engineering, cybersecurity, risk, compliance, operations, finance, procurement, and client-facing teams to align priorities and resolve trade-offs.
• Develop people and leaders: Build, coach, and retain multidisciplinary teams; establish clear accountability, succession plans, and a culture of collaboration and sound decision-making under pressure.
• Drive continuous improvement: Use performance data, incident reviews, automation, and engineering feedback to remove recurring problems and demonstrate sustained gains in reliability, recovery, efficiency, and cost.
• Guide modernization: Lead large-scale platform change and adopt DevOps, data, and AI-enabled engineering practices where they provide measurable value, with appropriate security, governance, and responsible-AI controls.
• Represent infrastructure at the executive level: Present a compelling platform vision, make evidence-based investment recommendations, and provide calm, credible updates during incidents and periods of change.
Qualifications and experience
Education
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
Professional experience
• 15+ years of software engineering, infrastructure engineering, or platform engineering experience, preferably in fintech, sell-side trading, electronic markets, or regulated financial services.
• 10+ years managing engineering teams and leaders, including responsibility for leadership pipelines, organizational development, budgets, vendor relationships, and enterprise delivery commitments.
• Proven record leading large-scale, business-critical platforms and modernization programs, including AI-enabled engineering practices that deliver measurable business impact.
• Experience improving availability, recovery, performance, and operational readiness for high-volume services, with specific examples of decisions made during major production incidents.
• Demonstrated ability to establish effective governance and sustain improvements through clear ownership, meaningful metrics, and disciplined execution.
Trading and technical expertise
• Working knowledge of principal and agency trading workflows and the different market-risk, operational, and client consequences of infrastructure failure.
• Strong understanding of market data, FIX, order and execution management systems, exchange and venue connectivity, and pre- and post-trade dependencies.
• Deep expertise in high-performance networks, colocation, low-latency systems, and end-to-end performance measurement, including tail latency, jitter, packet loss, and peak-load capacity.
• Ability to diagnose problems across network, operating-system, application, and venue boundaries while preserving essential security, risk, and audit controls.
• Broad understanding of modern platform architecture, full-stack development, APIs, integration, DevOps, data, and AI-enabled engineering, with sound judgment about their application to trading infrastructure.
Leadership and competencies
• Enterprise leadership: Builds strong teams and future leaders, mobilizes people across organizational boundaries, and creates a healthy engineering and on-call culture.
• Strategic judgment: Leads through complexity and converts enterprise-scale transformation into measurable outcomes while balancing speed, resilience, security, and cost.
• Stakeholder Management: Aligns senior stakeholders around a clear platform vision, communicates technical and business trade-offs plainly, and remains credible under pressure.
• Communication Skills: Deep technical knowledge to drive a refurbishment agenda, and communicate with that with clarity and technical depth.
• Commercial and client orientation: Connects infrastructure investment, modernization, and responsible innovation to execution capability, client confidence, and business value.
• Governance mindset: Drives accountability, transparency, risk management, responsible AI, and disciplined delivery across technology and operations.
What success looks like
Trading teams have predictable, observable, and resilient infrastructure. Principal and agency workflows receive the performance and controls they require. Incidents are detected and contained quickly, recovery plans work when tested, and recurring issues are eliminated. Leaders across the organization understand service risks and investment priorities, while infrastructure improvements produce measurable benefits for trading, clients, and the business.
