The Infectious Diseases Division at the University of Utah School of Medicine is recruiting for a faculty position in the Tenure Track, to fill the Spruance Endowed Chair in Virology. A generous startup package, protected research time and new laboratory space will be provided based on the applicant's needs. The level of appointment will be based on the successful candidate's prior experience and qualifications.

The Spotswood Lee Spruance and Joanne Louise Spruance Professorship in Infectious Diseases is a prestigious position within the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Utah's Department of Internal Medicine. This endowed Professorship is dedicated to advancing groundbreaking research in virology, supporting junior investigators who are leading innovative research in areas such as herpesvirus, HIV, influenza, hepatitis, Zika, and other significant viral infections. The role offers an exceptional opportunity for early-career faculty, at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher, to secure funding for research, laboratory space, travel, and other critical resources to further their investigations. Candidates with research interests exploring the viral etiology of chronic diseases, such as cancer or autoimmune conditions, are also highly encouraged to apply.

The Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Utah is part of the Department of Internal Medicine and is recognized for its strong emphasis on patient care, research, and education. The division focuses on a wide range of infectious diseases, providing comprehensive clinical services for patients with complex infections.

The Division has inpatient services for General Infectious Diseases and Transplant Infectious Diseases. The transplant service sees a wide variety of solid organ transplant and hematologic malignancy patients. Unique resources at the University of Utah School of Medicine include the ARUP laboratories, a national clinical reference laboratory, and a worldwide leader in innovative laboratory research and development.

All new faculty will be expected to participate in the educational mission by taking part in seminars, didactic lectures and clinical conferences. The Division currently has flourishing programs in the areas of HIV care, including a large Ryan White program; travel medicine and global health; and NIH / NCI funded research in virology.

The University of Utah has numerous robust resources available for research collaboration outside of the Division of Infectious Diseases. These include the Department of Population Health Science, the other Divisions of the Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, the Immunology, Inflammation, and Infectious Diseases (3i) Initiative, the Utah Population Database, and the Veterans Affairs Hospital. We also strongly encourage interdisciplinary collaboration with the Colleges of Nursing, Health, and Pharmacy and research that will capitalize on existing community partnerships.

Minimum qualifications: Candidates must be physician-scientists who are board-eligible or board-certified in infectious diseases and have established or show promise of establishing a research career. They must also have expertise in virology or be interested in pursuing a possible viral etiology of chronic diseases.
