Full Job Description
Vice President of Risk Management & Insurance HITT Contracting has an immediate need for a Vice President of Risk Management and Insurance. This leadership role sets strategic direction and provides operational oversight for the company's risk management and insurance functions. As a key member of the leadership team, the Vice President protects HITT's assets and profitability by managing enterprise risk, insurance programs, and claims across all business units, including the operating companies within the holding company structure. The Vice President of Risk Management and Insurance develops, implements, and continuously improves risk management standards, insurance programs, and claims practices. This leader negotiates carrier and broker relationships, manages the corporate insurance portfolio and captive insurance program, and partners with Operations, Preconstruction, and Legal to identify and mitigate project and enterprise risk. This position leads the Risk Management and Insurance team and reports directly to the General Counsel. The Vice President serves as a strategic partner to Operations, Preconstruction, Legal, and Executive Leadership, positioning HITT to grow profitably while managing risk exposure. Responsibilities • Provide executive leadership and strategic direction for Risk Management, Insurance, and Claims functions across the organization. • Set strategy for corporate insurance programs, including property, casualty, professional liability, and surety and bonding, and for broker, carrier, and underwriter relationships that secure competitive terms and coverage. • Set strategy for Owner-Controlled and Contractor-Controlled Insurance Programs (OCIP/CCIP), including when they apply to projects. • Oversee the company's captive insurance program, including governance, funding, and coordination across operating companies within the holding company structure. • Partner with Operations and Preconstruction leadership to establish project-specific insurance requirements, default risk strategies, and risk allocation approaches. • Set claims strategy and escalation protocols that drive efficient resolution and minimize losses across the portfolio. • Direct the analysis of loss trends and claims data to identify risk exposure and shape mitigation strategy. • Establish and continuously improve the enterprise risk management framework, standards, policies, and best practices across risk, insurance, and claims functions. • Advise executive leadership on emerging risks, market conditions, and regulatory changes affecting insurance, risk exposure, and the construction insurance and surety markets. • Shape contract risk transfer strategy, including certificate of insurance compliance and contractual risk transfer requirements, in partnership with Legal, Safety, Preconstruction, and Finance. • Oversee the subcontractor default insurance (SDI) program • Develop and present risk management reports, loss forecasts, and insurance program summaries to executive leadership and the board as needed. • Set departmental budget strategy, premium forecasting, and cost allocation across business units. • Shape talent strategy for the risk management function, building a high-performing team through mentorship, training, and career development. • Champion the adoption of risk management technology, analytics, and AI-assisted tools to improve risk identification and program efficiency. • Represent the company at industry organizations and events related to risk management, insurance, and surety. • Serve on corporate committees and contribute to organizational improvement initiatives. Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required. • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in risk management, insurance, or related roles, preferably within construction or a related industry. • Proven experience managing complex corporate insurance programs, including property, casualty, professional liability, and surety and bonding. • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, carriers, legal counsel, and internal stakeholders. • Demonstrated success negotiating with brokers, carriers, and underwriters to secure favorable coverage and terms. • Strong knowledge of construction risk management practices, including OCIP/CCIP programs, subcontractor default insurance, and contractual risk transfer. • Experience managing claims processes and working with legal counsel and carriers to resolve complex claims. • Professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, or RPLU preferred. • Strong financial acumen with the ability to analyze risk exposure, loss trends, and insurance costs. • Exceptional verbal, written, presentation, and client-facing communication skills. • Ability to think strategically and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. • Demonstrated leadership competencies including strategic orientation, talent development, innovation, collaboration, and executive presence. In accordance with Virginia Senate Bill 215 (SB 215), the base salary range for this position is: $160,000.00 - $220,000.00 Compensation in other cities and states may vary.
