Position description

The Department of Urology in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA invites applications from accomplished physician scientists with demonstrated expertise in basic science, translational science and/or clinical trials. This position will be in the Tenured Regular Professor series at the Associate or Full Professor rank. The incumbent will also hold an appointment as Vice Chair of Research, which is a term position that is subject to renewal. We seek a mid to senior level faculty member who will advance innovative, patient centered research programs that have the potential to translate discovery into clinical impact.

Successful candidates will join a highly collaborative and well resourced academic environment that supports cutting edge discovery science, robust clinical research infrastructure, inter-department collaboration, and strong institutional commitment to faculty development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the research mission, infrastructure, and vision for the Department of Urology
  • Lead and expand independent and collaborative/team science internally and externally funded research conducted in the Department of Urology.
  • Stimulate, shepherd, and oversee early and late phase investigator initiated and multicenter clinical studies.
  • Encourage mechanistic or discovery based insights into urologic conditions with a target for potential clinical application.
  • Actively identify high-quality external candidates for recruitment- Support urology physician-scientist and trainee integration and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including basic scientists, clinical investigators, biostatisticians, informaticians, and regulatory teams.
  • Mentor trainees (medical students, residents, and fellows), as well as faculty in research design, funding, and career development.
  • Encourage and support Urology faculty and trainee contributions and scholarly dissemination to high impact publications and national/international presentations.
  • Participate in institutional research initiatives, centers, or networks aligned with expertise.
  • Support pathways for tech transfer and commercial development, if and when appropriate
  • Collaborate with intradepartmental and extradepartmental leadership within the David Geffen School of Medicine and Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center to leverage resources, streamline regulatory processes, and optimize research output.

Required Qualifications

MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree (s); Board certification (or eligibility) in Urology. Candidates must have an established track record of productivity and funding in basic research, translational research, health services, and/or clinical trials; evidence of ongoing or emerging extramural funding (e.g., NIH, foundations, industry; record of peer reviewed publications demonstrating scientific rigor and impact; and eligibility for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level.

Preferred Qualifications

The highly successful candidate will be experienced basic, translational, and/or clinical researcher; have prior leadership roles in research programs, cores, centers, or clinical trial networks; demonstrated commitment to mentorship, team science, and interdisciplinary collaboration; and experience advancing research inclusivity and excellence.
