Full Job Description

What’s the role?

We’re looking for a Staff UX Researcher to help define and raise the quality of experiences across Etsy. You will lead research and measurement passionate about Etsy UX quality, helping build buyer and seller experiences that are usable, distinctive, and polished.

You will establish a shared definition of experience quality and build the research systems needed to assess it consistently. You’ll benchmark core Etsy buyer and seller flows, identify the most consequential usability gaps, and help teams understand whether modernization efforts are meaningfully improving the customer experience.

This is a highly collaborative and influential individual contributor role. You will work across Etsy with Product, Design, Engineering, Analytics, and Research, translating evidence into clear priorities, standards, and recommendations. You will own a cross-functional research program, not simply a series of individual studies.

This is a full-time position reporting to a Director of Research.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

The UX Foundations team helps Etsy build usable, distinctive, and polished experiences across our marketplace. The team develops the systems, patterns, guidance, and shared standards that enable product teams to deliver high-quality experiences at scale.

This role will work across Buyer and Seller experiences rather than supporting a single product area. We are focused on questions such as:

  • What defines a high-quality Etsy experience across different customer journeys?

  • Where are the most consequential usability and consistency gaps across Etsy?

  • How do Etsy’s core buyer and seller flows compare with ecommerce experience standards?

  • How can we measure whether modernization makes experiences more usable, distinctive, and polished?

  • What repeatable benchmarks and guidance will help teams make better product decisions?

What does the day-to-day look like?
  • Define experience quality and set the research and measurement strategy for UX modernization across Etsy.

  • Build and lead a repeatable benchmarking program for core Etsy buyer and seller flows, measuring experiences over time and against ecommerce experience standards.

  • Establish important baselines and success measures spanning usability, task completion, efficiency, customer perception, and other relevant experience-quality signals.

  • Lead mixed-methods research that identifies and prioritizes experience gaps and evaluates modernized product experiences.

  • Integrate quantitative and qualitative research with behavioral data, customer-experience tracking, competitive intelligence, and existing Etsy research.

  • Translate complex evidence into clear recommendations that influence product roadmaps, design standards, and investment decisions across teams.

  • Create scalable methods, tools, reporting practices, and guidance that enable teams to assess experience quality consistently.

  • Partner with and mentor researchers across Etsy, strengthening mixed-methods practice and elevating the organization’s approach to usability measurement.

  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require. You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy’s discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • 5+ years conducting product research.

  • Strong quantitative research expertise, including crafting detailed surveys and measurement frameworks, applying appropriate statistical methods, and interpreting comparative or longitudinal data.

  • Expertise and judgment to select the right qualitative and quantitative approaches to sophisticated questions.

  • Deep knowledge of usability research and the ability to translate an abstract concept like experience quality into clear, measurable dimensions.

  • A track record of developing durable research programs, not just individual study plans, across complex and ambiguous problem spaces.

  • Connect customer evidence, product data, and external signals into a clear point of view and actionable recommendations.

  • Strong communication and influence skills, including aligning senior partners and communicate research in terms of decisions, priorities, and tradeoffs.

  • Experience with design systems, usability measurement, benchmarking, and large-scale UX transformation is preferred.
