JOB TITLE: Urgent Care Provider (PA/NP)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Urgent Care Provider (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) is responsible for providing comprehensive, patient-centered care to individuals seeking evaluation and treatment for acute illnesses, injuries, and urgent medical conditions. The Urgent Care Provider evaluates, diagnoses, treats, and manages a broad range of conditions commonly seen in the urgent care setting, while identifying patients who require emergency, specialty, or higher-level care.

The Urgent Care Provider practices within the scope of licensure, certification, education, training, and organizational privileges and collaborates closely with physicians, primary care providers, nursing staff, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe, timely, and high-quality care. This role supports Snoqualmie Valley Health's mission by improving access to convenient medical care, promoting wellness and prevention, delivering exceptional clinical outcomes, and fostering strong relationships with patients and the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Provide timely, comprehensive evaluation and treatment of acute illnesses, injuries, and urgent medical conditions.
• Obtain and document accurate medical histories and perform appropriate physical examinations.
• Develop differential diagnoses and evidence-based treatment plans based on clinical findings, diagnostic testing, and patient needs.
• Perform procedures within the provider's training, competency, and organizational privileges, including wound care, laceration repair, splinting, casting, foreign body removal, incision and drainage, and other urgent care procedures as appropriate.
• Order, interpret, and appropriately respond to laboratory studies, point-of-care testing, imaging, and other diagnostic tests.
• Recognize patients with potentially serious or life-threatening conditions and initiate appropriate stabilization and transfer to a higher level of care when indicated.
• Provide appropriate follow-up recommendations and communicate with primary care and specialty providers to promote continuity of care.
• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, medications, preventive care, return precautions, and follow-up needs.
• Maintain complete, timely, and accurate medical records in accordance with organizational, legal, and regulatory standards.

• Deliver evidence-based urgent services consistent with current clinical guidelines and organizational standards.
• Provide appropriate management of common urgent care conditions, including respiratory illnesses, infections, gastrointestinal complaints, musculoskeletal injuries, minor trauma, dermatologic conditions, urinary conditions, and other acute medical concerns.
• Perform and interpret appropriate point-of-care testing, including tests such as rapid infectious disease testing, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, glucose testing, and other diagnostics within the scope of practice.
• Perform procedures consistent with training, competency, and clinical privileges.
• Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with Washington State laws, organizational policies, and evidence-based clinical practice.
• Participate in patient safety, quality improvement, peer review, and performance improvement activities.
• Maintain current knowledge and clinical competency through continuing medical education, professional development, and ongoing skills assessment.
• Adhere to organizational policies, infection prevention standards, controlled-substance requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
• Recognize and appropriately manage clinical emergencies, including initiating emergency response and stabilization measures when necessary.

• Assist in developing standardized workflows and clinical protocols that promote consistent, high-quality urgent care delivery.

• Partner with multidisciplinary teams to provide coordinated care across the healthcare continuum.
• Build collaborative relationships with primary care providers, emergency physicians, hospitalists, specialists, nurses, radiology staff, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals.
• Facilitate appropriate referrals and transitions of care for patients requiring primary care, specialty care, emergency services, or other community resources.
• Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, expected clinical course, and indications for reassessment or escalation of care.
• Participate in community health education and outreach activities as appropriate.
• Serve as a clinical resource and supportive team member for nursing staff, medical assistants, other advanced practice providers, and healthcare professionals.
• Foster an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative environment that supports patients, families, and colleagues.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• Master's degree or higher from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
• Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Nurse Practitioner (ARNP/NP) credential appropriate to the individual's professional discipline.

Licensure & Certification:

• Current Washington State Physician Assistant or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner license, or ability to obtain prior to employment.
• National certification appropriate to the provider's discipline and specialty.
• Current DEA registration or eligibility to obtain prior to employment, as applicable.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
• Additional certifications relevant to urgent care practice are preferred.

Experience

• 2-3 years of prior experience in urgent care, emergency medicine, or a comparable acute-care setting required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Broad clinical knowledge of acute illnesses, injuries, and conditions commonly encountered in urgent care.
• Strong clinical judgment, assessment skills, and diagnostic reasoning.
• Ability to identify patients requiring emergency evaluation, hospitalization, specialty consultation, or other escalation of care.
• Competency in common urgent care procedures appropriate to training and privileges.
• Ability to manage multiple patients efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to educate patients with varying levels of health literacy.
• Strong organizational, time management, and documentation skills.
• Commitment to evidence-based medicine, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement.
• Proficiency with electronic health records and common clinical technology.
• Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, medical assistants, laboratory and radiology personnel, and other healthcare professionals.
• Ability to maintain composure and sound clinical judgment during high-volume periods and emergent situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during patient care.
• Ability to perform repetitive movements and procedures requiring manual dexterity.
• Ability to lift, push, or move equipment and supplies up to 25 pounds.
• Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to perform physical examinations, procedures, and clinical assessments.
• Ability to move quickly and respond appropriately during medical emergencies.
• Ability to safely assist with patient transfers or positioning as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Works primarily in an outpatient urgent care clinic and may interact with other areas of the healthcare system as needed to coordinate patient care.
• Fast-paced clinical environment with variable patient volume and acuity.
• Frequent interaction with patients, families, physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, medical assistants, laboratory and radiology personnel, and other multidisciplinary healthcare team members.
• Exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and other occupational hazards requiring adherence to standard precautions and infection prevention practices.
• May encounter patients requiring emergent stabilization and transfer to an emergency department or higher level of care.
• Requires flexibility to meet patient care needs, including scheduled evenings, weekends, and holidays as applicable to urgent care operations.
