Underwriter - Small Business Construction Team S&S

Job Description

Our Surplus & Specialty Lines (S&S) Division develops customized coverage solutions for complex exposures, difficult-to-insure risks and niche segments of the market. S&S has over 850 employees (including more than 250 based in India), 10+ locations in the United States and 2 locations in India. Our product reach includes Sharing Economy, Environmental, Energy, Transportation, Construction, Excess & Umbrella, Primary Special Risk, Security, and other industry segments. S&S is the second largest division within C&F at over $1.5 billion in annual gross written premium.

This position can be remotely located in SE United States - Atlanta GA, FL, AL, TN, NC, SC.  It supports Small Business Construction in that territory.

Summary

Responsible for review and analysis of underwriting data to build and maintain a profitable book of primary liability business under direct supervision within the Small Business Construction department. Continues training and educational activities to build underwriting knowledge base.  Manages agency relationships through continued customer service and marketing activities. Collaborates with colleagues to achieve departmental goals.

Minimum

Duties & Responsibilities

• Works with manager/mentor to meet profitability, retention, and written premium goals determined by the department.
• Builds skills to make independent underwriting decisions and maintain proper file documentation.
• Works within assigned letter of authority.
• Develops knowledge of department products and services.
• Gain analytical and strategic decision making skills by working closely with mentor.
• Participates in training and initiatives to develop knowledge base.
• May participate in projects.
• Effectively displays ability to build and foster agency relationships through marketing activities.
• Manages assigned territory, agents and accounts.
• Travel required.  Expected to be less than 20%
• Other duties as assigned.

Recommended Education & Skill Requirements 

·       Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and 3+ years of underwriting experience or equivalent training program preferred.

·         Pursuing or having insurance industry designations such as  AINS, CPCU, CRIS, etc. a plus.

·         Possesses strong communication and analytical skills to pursue new business and manage a renewal book.

·         Proficient in software needed to succeed in department.

·         Strong organizational and time management skills.
