Position SummaryThe Commercial Binding Authority Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, pricing, and managing a portfolio of commercial insurance business while building strong relationships with broker partners and driving profitable growth.
This role will underwrite new and renewal business within established authority, evaluate exposures and coverage needs, and make sound risk selection and pricing decisions. The Underwriter will also actively manage their broker relationships and production pipeline, identify opportunities to grow the portfolio, and collaborate across the team to develop solutions that appropriately address insureds' risks.
The ideal candidate brings strong commercial underwriting fundamentals, experience working within binding authority, and the ability to balance technical underwriting discipline with a relationship-driven, production-oriented approach.
What will your job entail?Underwriting & Risk Selection- Evaluate, price, and underwrite new business, renewals, and endorsements in accordance with underwriting guidelines and assigned authority.
- Analyze individual risks to determine appropriate classification, exposures, premium basis, pricing, coverage forms, and endorsements.
- Apply appropriate credits and debits to develop sustainable, risk-appropriate pricing.
- Review inspection reports and other available information to assess risk quality and validate exposures.
- Integrate relevant internal and external information into underwriting decisions.
- Identify risks requiring additional review and follow established referral guidelines.
- Maintain clear and accurate documentation of underwriting decisions and rationale.
- Ensure policies, endorsements, and other transactions are processed accurately and timely.
Portfolio & Broker Management- Actively manage an assigned portfolio with a focus on underwriting quality, retention, and profitable growth.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with assigned brokers, customers, and other business partners.
- Clearly communicate quotes, coverage terms, conditions, and underwriting requirements to broker partners.
- Establish and actively manage a pipeline of new business opportunities.
- Conduct stewardship meetings and participate in marketing activities, broker meetings, and industry events.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen existing relationships and expand production with key broker partners.
Collaboration- Partner with fellow underwriters and other team members to develop a comprehensive understanding of insured exposures and appropriate coverage solutions.
- Share market and broker insights that support portfolio and business development strategies.
- Contribute to a collaborative, solutions-oriented underwriting environment focused on disciplined growth.
What We're Looking ForEducation & Experience- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, Insurance, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.
- 5+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience, including experience with Binding Authority business preferred.
- Candidates with a Master's degree and at least 3 years of relevant underwriting experience may also be considered.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating risk, determining appropriate coverage and pricing, and managing an underwriting portfolio.
- Experience developing and maintaining productive broker relationships.
- Working knowledge of commercial insurance policy language, coverage forms, endorsements, and rating methodologies.
Licenses & Certifications- Applicable state Property & Casualty and/or Surplus Lines licenses, as required.
- CIC and/or CPCU designation preferred.

The target salary range for this position is $120,000.00 - $150,000.00 annually.
The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
