Responsibilities

The Underwriter/Sr. Underwriter will manage all related underwriting tasks for new and renewal accounts required in assigned regions to promote written premium growth and favorable loss ratio results.  The role will work closely with the TMs, AVPs, RVPs across assigned regions.  The role is expected to have increased involvement in the management, development and training of junior underwriting staff and increased responsibility for the business results of BMP. This role will also have significant influence as to the workflow and execution of a number of strategic initiatives.  This role may be responsible for managing a team of underwriters.

 

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for new & renewal accounts which focuses on underwriting and pricing risks in accordance with BMP’s business rules and personal underwriting authority. 
  • Ownership of the lifecycle of the submission including quoting, filing all relevant documents, binding, issuing and obtaining signed and executed applications. 
  • Support consistent underwriting best practices, in accordance with underwriting guidelines, to ensure rating, pricing, profitability, and structuring adequacy.
  • Responsible for assigning and managing the work of a team of underwriters.
  • Assist underwriters in executing on strategic initiatives. Provide support and develop solutions to their issues/concerns (system, guidelines, training, reports, new project request, product amendments).
  • Assist underwriters in collaborating with Territory Managers, AVPs and RVPs to target desirable accounts.
  • Identify the need for and manage special underwriting projects as needed.
  • Fully engage with agency personnel by providing superior customer service. 
  • In conjunction with TM’s, AVP’s and RVP’s will establish a workflow for renewals that will allow for “Insurance with Ease” for our agents. 
  • Work closely with the TM’s, AVPs and RVP’s to establish and implement a sales culture In collaboration with TM’s, AVP’s and RVP’s, creates the workflow that will establish the best user experience for the independent agent in the onboarding process. 
  • Ownership of the lifecycle of the submission including quoting, filing all relevant documents, binding, issuing and obtaining signed and executed applications. 
  • Manages the submission queue for all regions which requires a strong attention to detail.  Enters submissions in the system and accurately assigns them to the correct underwriter as well as filing documents accordingly. 
  • Establish strong relationships with agents in driving mutually beneficial results through agency planning, production and growth.
  • Monitor competitor’s offerings and emerging industry issues.
  • Embrace relevant technology and actively improves skillset through formal and informal learning.
  • Serves as a resource for new and innovative ideas to continually challenge the status quo.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 5-7 years of management liability underwriting or related experience at an insurance company or agency or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

  • Experience contributing on a high performing marketing/ sales team in a high growth, fast paced environment.
  • Advanced product knowledge within the Management Liability suite of products (D&O, Cyber, EPL, Crime, Fiduciary, and MPL).
  • Empathy and understanding of the needs of our independent agents.  Will be an advocate for Berkley Management Protection customers and as such, will be passionate about their brand experience. 
  • An agile team player with strong written and verbal communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-organize, prioritize and request help when needed.
  • Execution-oriented with attention to details driven by natural curiosity and competitive spirit.
