We9re growing our Underground design and construction business and have opportunities for experienced, motivated industry professionals to join us as we continue our journey to help our clients succeed. We have a specific opportunity for an experienced underground engineer to join our transmission and distribution team.

We are addressing projects across the country that range widely in complexity and voltage. We are supporting our clients as they take on new challenges to rebuild their electric grid to support the challenges of tomorrow. The Underground Civil Engineer will work on a variety of 2.4kV to 345kV underground utility transmission and distribution projects. The Underground Engineer will work with a project team to implement effective and creative solutions for the grid, within budget constraints, design factors, and client needs. This position will interface with utility clients and collaborate with multiple offices. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Work with design teams of 2 to 10 engineers and designers, and work closely with construction, procurement and permitting teams to execute underground transmission and distribution construction projects.
  • Work closely with local and national leadership to develop new clients and continue building relationships with existing clients.
  • Support business development efforts with new clients across North America.
  • Support thought leadership, including conference attendance, marketing, and other internal initiatives.
  • Prepare and develop distribution and transmission voltage construction packages for underground projects, including manhole and equipment installation, conduit and duct bank design, feeder replacement, cable replacement, and new feeder design.
  • Develop routing analysis for the design of low to high-voltage distribution and transmission lines using CADD/GIS design and mapping software.
  • Determine construction feasibility through route studies, conflict analysis, and construction cost estimating.
  • Perform field inspections, measurements, or calculations for overhead and underground electric facilities on public and private utility systems.
  • Leverage commercially available simulation software and other tools to evaluate different scenarios and make informed recommendations to the client.
  • Produce reports and visualizations to communicate technical results and interpretation of trends; effectively communicate findings and recommendations to all areas of the business.
  • Work closely with the project team to ensure deliverables and services are being provided to the client9s satisfaction.
  • Work closely with the project team to ensure that projects are following internal QA/QC guidelines.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of studies, reports, and construction design packages.
  • Prepare calculations and assist with equipment specifications, such as cable pulling calculations, voltage drop, and pole loading.
  • Prepare proposals, engineering/project cost estimates, and execution schedules.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members.
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients, subcontractors, or outside personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor9s Degree in Civil/Structural, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 3 years of relevant engineering experience required.
  • Or Bachelor9s Degree in Civil/Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering Technology degree from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of relevant engineering experience required.
  • Successful completion (i.e., passing) of FE or EIT preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of underground construction methods and/or electrical system equipment.
  • Experience with geotechnical investigations and soil analysis, specifically with regard to determining applicable trenchless technologies for a potential design.
  • Experience with United States Geological Survey (USGS) publicly available resources.
  • Experience with Arema standards and requirements for trenchless crossings is a plus.
  • Experience with horizontal directional drill design and construction is a plus.
  • Experience with jack and bore design and construction is a plus.
  • Experience with Microtunnel design and construction is a plus.
  • Experience with calculations associated with trenchless installations is a plus (pipe stress analysis, annular pressure analysis, settlement analysis, installation load calculations, jacking force/thrust calculations, face pressure load calculations, etc.)
  • Experience with the preparation and review of technical specifications associated with trenchless installations.
  • Inadvertent return mitigation and analysis are a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience conducting field inspections or other applicable on-site construction support experience is a plus.
  • Experience with construction cost estimating for trenchless installations is a plus.
  • Experience with construction schedule preparation is a plus.
  • Constructability review of trenchless design experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of power flow is a plus.
  • Experience with various underground design tools, as well as CADD and GIS, to aid in design.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D is a plus.
  • Familiarity with topographic mapping & surveying, and subsurface utility engineering/utility locating procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge regarding easements, right-of-way, and permitting.
  • Familiarity with NESC code for electrical design and construction guidelines is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of devising new, more efficient approaches to solving problems and processes.
  • Able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and to prioritize work.
