Full Job Description
The Opportunity

Cala Health is seeking a UI/UX Designer to own design of Cala's digital experiences including web and mobile. You will champion the creative vision and own end-to-end visual and interaction design.

Working closely with Product and Engineering, you will create the design language that carries across every surface for one coherent experience, translate requirements into user experience flows, and own the related design documentation.

Title: UI/UX DesignerReports to: Software Engineering Manager
Location: Remote ORHybrid if local (Onsite 3 days per week)
Employment type: Full-Time, Exempt
Pay range: 120k -140k

Final compensation is based on experience, skills, market benchmarks, and internal equity, with potential adjustments for candidate location.

AI Disclaimer: Cala does not permit the use of AI during interviews and technical testing so that we can properly assess thought process and skillset.

Responsibilities
  • End-to-end design execution: Own visual design and user experience flows across web and mobile (iOS/Android) - from flows and wireframes through high-fidelity UI, interaction, and motion design - meeting accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) throughout.
  • Data visualization & clinical insights: Design flows, dashboards, and data displays that turn complex data into actionable insights.
  • Design language & system: Create Cala's visual and interaction design language and the system behind it - component library, design tokens, versioning - so it scales across form factors and accessibility modes and maps directly to front-end implementation.
  • User research & validation: With Product Management, conduct Voice of Customer (VOC) research, interviews, and usability testing for early-stage discovery and post-design acceptance testing.
  • Multimodal UI: Partner with product and engineering to turn concepts into high-fidelity design documents, including notification and feedback moments across connected devices.
  • Design documentation & handoff: Author and maintain UI/UX documentation, redlines, and specifications with rigorous version control for handoff to engineering.
  • Design leadership & scaling: Lead cross-functional design reviews from concept through implementation, and scale design operations to support Cala's growth in a regulated medical device environment.

Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, related disciplines, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of digital UI/UX or product design experience with shipped web and mobile products, including healthcare platforms for patients and/or clinicians within HIPAA regulations and data privacy/Protected Health Information (PHI) constraints.
  • Deep understanding of native mobile design standards, including Apple Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) and Google Material Design.
  • Deep knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and inclusive design, and direct experience developing accessibility-driven user interfaces.
  • Familiarity with medical device usability engineering standards (IEC 62366, FDA Human Factors guidance) and comfort with the documentation and version-control rigor a regulated environment requires.
  • Experience in Agile/Scrum environments, partnering closely with Product, Engineering, and QA.
  • A portfolio showing strong visual design sensibility and end-to-end UX work across connected platforms.
  • Proficiency in Figma, including components, auto layout, variables and modes, Dev Mode, prototypes, and design documentation practices.
  • Hands-on with AI-assisted design tooling for concept exploration, research synthesis, and prototyping, with sound judgment about its limits in a regulated context.
  • Proficiency in usability testing to validate design decisions.
  • Experience creating and scaling a design language or design system, including design tokens, plus enough front-end literacy (HTML/CSS, React or SwiftUI) to collaborate on feasibility.

Nice to Have
  • Wearable/Embedded UI: Experience designing for wearable or embedded device displays.
  • Regulatory Usability Testing: Experience participating in Formative and Summative Usability Testing specifically for FDA submissions or CE marking.
  • AI/ML-Enabled Products: Experience designing AI/ML-enabled or adaptive software in FDA-regulated products.
  • Prototyping in Code: Comfort building interactive prototypes in code or with AI prototyping tools before handoff.
