Schematic Design Engineer - Houston or San Antonio Office

Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is seeking a dedicated and talented Schematic Design Engineer to join our team in Houston or San Antonio, Texas. As a key member of our team, you will contribute to the design and development of innovative solutions that enhance the safety and efficiency of transportation infrastructure in the region.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

Capabilities should include knowledge of preliminary and final roadway design, and familiar with appropriate software used to design. Experienced in preparing schematic designs for complex interchanges, urban freeways, rural highways, toll roads, county road and city streets. Should be familiar with TxDOT Roadway Design Manual and City of Houston design criteria.
  • Must have 8-12 years of design and design management experience on transportation projects including
  • Must be a Texas License professional engineer, or eligible for licensure within 6 months.
  • Experience with MicroStation required, GIS preferred, and OpenRoads-DU experience is a plus
  • TxDOT pre-certification in Roadway Design, Drainage Design, Structures categories. Pre-certification in all other categories a plus.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with a team

Duties
  • Prepare scope of work & fee proposals for Preliminary Engineering/Schematics assignments
  • Lead the planning, management, and delivery of surface transportation projects, with a primary focus on schematic development for highways and roadways
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, engaging regularly to understand needs, manage expectations, and ensure satisfaction throughout project delivery.
  • Direct multidisciplinary internal teams, including roadway, traffic, drainage, environmental, and structures, to deliver coordinated and technically sound design solutions.
  • Oversee project scope, schedule, budget, and quality, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and client requirements.
  • Guide the development of schematic design alternatives, alignment studies, preliminary layouts, and corridor level analysis.
  • Support production of technical documents, reports, presentations, and project deliverables.
  • Identify and mitigate project risks while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and proactive problem-solving.
  • Support business development activities, including client relationship management, proposal development, and pursuit strategy.

Physical Demands

This position predominantly involves up to 8 hours per day at a computer workstation, with occasional standing and walking. The employee may occasionally lift lightweight office supplies and materials, typically not exceeding 20 pounds. The office environment is indoors, characterized by controlled temperatures and minimal exposure to adverse conditions. During fieldwork, the engineer may be exposed to different environments with loud noise, dust, dirt, changing temperatures, and must be able to move skillfully around construction sites.

Expected Hours of Work

The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing an unpaid hour for lunch daily. Work schedules may vary according to the project schedule; some night and weekend work may be required.
