Full Job Description
The Technical Specialist in Diagnostic Strategy will oversee the on-board diagnostic (OBD) system implementation, calibration and validation for powertrain development programs. The role will work in close cooperation with the regulatory groups to ensure the OBD system implementation meets the required standards. The Technical Specialist in Diagnostic Strategy will directly support hands-on calibration activities and will mentor the calibration group on diagnostic calibration and validation strategy. This position is in Livonia, MI.

As a Technical Specialist, you will:
  • Interpret existing OBD and diagnostic communication regulations/standards for current development programs; monitor proposed regulatory changes and communication standard updates
  • Lead OBD system definition and OBD boundary assessment
  • Oversee implementation of diagnostic standardization requirements
  • Oversee diagnostic system calibration, validation, and certification activities on-road, chassis, and engine dynos; evaluate data for quality and OBD system robustness
  • Define scope of work, develop program plans/timing, break work into packages, identify resources, estimate durations, and set milestones
  • Develop test plans, track calibration progress, interface with customers, and present technical results and next steps
  • Identify system requirements during system hardware design to ensure a robust diagnostic system
  • Use standard instrumentation toolsets for data acquisition, storage, and analysis
  • Calibrate and consult on diagnostic thresholds, report on calibration status, and lead the generation of OBD applications and supporting documentation.
  • Develop functional requirements for diagnostic algorithm implementation into the powertrain control systems with emphasis on failure mode effects management and regulatory compliance for required diagnostics.
  • Analyze test results, develop and execute actions to provide solutions for issues.

To be considered as a Technical Specialist, you will need:
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or similar field.
  • Minimum 8 years of OBD system implementation experience.
  • Vehicle and/or dynamometer-based OBD diagnostic calibration development experience.
  • Integrated Calibration and Application Tool (ETAS INCA) or Accurate Technologies, Inc. (ATI) Vision calibration tools experience.
  • Experience interpreting software documentation and writing functional requirements for new software feature implementation.
  • Good driving record.
  • Knowledge and understanding of modern powertrain operation.
  • In depth knowledge of US OBD regulations
  • In depth knowledge of commonly used monitoring strategies to fulfill US OBD requirements
  • Ability to assess the OBD boundary of an application based on hardware and controls documentation
  • Extensive experience with OBD diagnostic calibration, validation, and documentation.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate in a team environment with both written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to lead and mentor team members.


A successful candidate may also have:
  • Ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle.
  • Have or ability to obtain a chauffeurs and/or CDL B license
