Technical Solution ArchitectImprovix Technologies | Corporate Business Development | Reston, VA
Compensation: $180,000 - $200,000 - base salaryLocation: Reston, VA - hybrid, onsite as needed
Clearance: An active clearance is preferred but not required.
Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire
A lot of jobs titled Solution Architect turn out to be proposal production with a diagramming tool attached. You inherit a win theme, draw the architecture that matches it, and never speak to the customer whose problem it supposedly solves. The tell is easy to spot: when a federal technical lead asks a genuinely hard question in a capture meeting, somebody from BD answers it.
Improvix Technologies is hiring a Technical Solution Architect onto our corporate Business Development team. You9ll design and own the technical approach across federal pursuits - RFPs, task orders, recompetes, RFIs, and whitepapers - and in that meeting, you9ll be the one answering the question.
Right now this work lands on executives who already have day jobs, which means it happens late and it happens compressed. Closing that gap is the role. It comes with real autonomy rather than a queue, because the alternative to you deciding is nobody having time to decide carefully.
WHY SOLUTION ARCHITECTS TAKE THIS ROLE- You own the technical approach. Not just the volume. You decide the architecture, the differentiators, and whether the approach is honest - then you write the narrative that carries it.
- Customer-facing by design. Sitting with federal technical leads and product owners is in the job description, not an occasional privilege. You9ll represent the company directly, on your own technical credibility.
- Genuine technical breadth. Cloud, DevSecOps, data platforms, cybersecurity, and low-code across ServiceNow, Salesforce, and Unqork - spanning several agencies. Few roles let you range that widely and still go deep.
- You9ll live with what you design. We9re small enough that the architecture you propose is the architecture that gets built, and you9ll still be here when it is. That accountability loop is one most BD-side architects never get, and it makes you better at the job.
- Influence over what we chase. Your read on feasibility shapes what we pursue, not just how we write it up. If an approach won9t work, saying so early is the contribution.
WHAT YOU9LL OWNSolution Development & Architecture- Design, architect, and propose technical solutions for new and existing federal opportunities - RFPs, task orders, and recompetes.
- Build architectures that are scalable, compliant, and actually deliverable at the price we9re bidding, which is the constraint most solution designs quietly ignore.
- Make and defend the technology selection calls, including the ones where the fashionable answer isn9t the right one for the customer9s environment.
Capture Partnership- Partner with business development, capture, and program leadership to align the technical approach to the capture strategy and the customer9s mission.
- Shape opportunities early - during RFIs, sources sought, and industry days - when the requirements can still be influenced.
- Give leadership an honest technical read on win probability, including when the answer argues for a no-bid.
Customer Engagement- Serve as the technical subject matter expert with current and prospective clients.
- Articulate Improvix9s capabilities, offerings, and differentiators in mission terms rather than feature lists.
- Hold your own in a technical conversation with a federal lead without needing a translator in the room.
Proposal Production- Develop technical volumes, solution narratives, architecture diagrams, and compliance matrices for proposals and whitepapers.
- Write so an evaluator who is tired, on volume six, and scoring against a rubric can find the point quickly.
Technology Strategy & Roadmap- Identify emerging technologies and architectures that strengthen our technical posture - particularly across cloud, DevSecOps, low-code platforms, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
- Keep our solution patterns current against federal frameworks like FedRAMP and Zero Trust, so the approach holds up under security review and not just evaluation.
Across the Programs- Support technical alignment across active programs, and provide design input on modernization and transformation initiatives.
- Carry what works on one program into the solutions we propose on the next, so each pursuit starts from something real rather than a blank page.
Practice Building- Support technical growth and standardization across engineering teams, bridging business development, delivery, and innovation.
- Find the gaps in how solutioning gets done here and fix them - reusable artifacts, better intake, earlier technical engagement - so the next high-value pursuit is less of a scramble.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE- We win more of what we chase. Improvix wins new work on the strength of solutions that are technically sound, customer-aligned, and honestly scoped.
- You hold the room. You can walk into a room with a federal technical lead or product owner and carry the conversation on your own.
- You move between altitudes. You get into the weeds when the detail decides the outcome, and zoom back out to shape the architecture and the narrative.
- Pursuits stop depending on heroics. Solutioning stops being something that happens late, at night, on top of someone9s other job. You drive it independently, early, and with confidence.
WHAT YOU BRINGThese are the requirements - everything in 4Bonus Points4 below is genuinely optional. If you meet this list, apply.
- 7+ years in IT solution architecture, systems engineering, or technical leadership in federal environments.
- Proven experience leading or supporting solution development for federal opportunities - RFPs, RFIs, and whitepapers.
- Strong grasp of enterprise architecture, including cloud (AWS, Azure), data platforms, and low-code and no-code ecosystems such as ServiceNow, Salesforce, and Unqork.
- Familiarity with federal security, compliance, and modernization frameworks - FedRAMP, Zero Trust, and the ATO process.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical detail into a customer value proposition without hollowing out the technical content.
- Strong collaboration skills - able to work effectively with BD, program managers, engineers, and executives, each of whom wants something different from you.
- Bachelor9s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
- U.S. citizenship. An active clearance is preferred but not required.
BONUS POINTS- Experience supporting or designing solutions for agencies such as DOJ, the Department of State, DHS, or the U.S. Capitol Police.
- Hands-on experience with DevSecOps toolchains, data architecture, or cloud-native application development.
- Ownership of a technical volume start to finish, including the color team reviews.
- Experience as both a strategic advisor and a hands-on contributor - the people who can do only one tend to struggle on either side of this role.
- Background standing up solutioning processes, reusable artifacts, or a capture knowledge base from scratch.
- Relevant cloud or platform certifications - AWS, Azure, ServiceNow, Salesforce, or comparable.
WORKING HEREImprovix Technologies delivers secure, modern, integrated technology solutions that keep the nation9s most critical systems running. We9re small enough that a good idea reaches a decision-maker in a day, and close enough to the mission that you9ll know exactly what your work supports.
You don9t have to be salesy: we9re not looking for someone who closes. We9re looking for someone technically credible enough that the customer trusts what they hear, and comfortable enough to be the face of the company in a room. Authenticity carries further than polish in this market. But you do have to want to be in the room - if you9d rather stay entirely internal, this isn9t the right seat.
A straight answer on rhythm: pursuit work is lumpy. Some weeks are architecture, roadmap, and standards. Other weeks there9s a technical volume due Friday and you9re deep in it at 9pm on Wednesday. That9s the nature of capture work everywhere, and we9d rather name it than let you discover it during your first proposal. Between pursuits, the time genuinely is yours to spend on the strategic work.
On location: based in Reston with hybrid flexibility, onsite as needed. Customer meetings, capture sessions, and proposal crunches pull you in; the rest flexes.
Ready to apply? Send us your re9sume9. If there9s a technical volume you owned that won, an architecture you had to defend to a skeptical government lead, or a pursuit you recommended against and were right about, tell us about it - that9s the conversation we want to have.
