DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARYThe Technical Project Manager is accountable for the technical delivery workstream supporting complex transit vehicle technology implementations. The role leads mechanical engineering coordination, vehicle configuration development, mounting and installation design, prototype and conditional-installation support, technical documentation, and controlled transfer of approved technical information to field teams.
This position combines technical judgment with disciplined workstream management. The Technical Project Manager partners closely with the Project Manager and Field Coordinator, but remains the primary owner for technical readiness, engineering deliverables, configuration accuracy, and technical issue resolution.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESTechnical workstream planning and control- Develop and maintain the technical workstream plan, milestones, dependencies, resource assignments, priorities, and delivery forecasts in alignment with the integrated project schedule.
- Lead and coordinate mechanical engineering and technical writing activities, collaborating with engineering teams and technical writers to ensure accurate, high-quality outcomes.
- Coordinate product, supply-chain, production, quality, and field-support resources across vehicle types and project phases.
- Maintain technical action, risk, issue, decision, dependency, and change records; assign owners and due dates and drive items to verified technical closure.
- Provide accurate technical status, schedule impacts, risks, assumptions, and decisions to the Project Manager and customer-facing team.
- Provide technical dependencies, configuration requirements, material lead-time assumptions, and engineering estimates for schedule recovery, kit-demand planning, and production forecasting.
- Escalate resource, design, approval, configuration, and documentation constraints before they affect prototypes, production, or field installation.
Vehicle engineering and installation readiness- Plan and lead the technical portions of vehicle surveys, engineering reviews, dry fits, prototypes, first-of-type builds, conditional installations, and technical acceptance activities.
- Confirm mounting solutions, hardware, cabling, connections, materials, drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and installation methods meet contractual requirements, customer standards, and actual vehicle conditions.
- Coordinate technical decisions with Engineering, Product Management, Supply Chain, Production, Quality, Field Service, Installation, and the customer; document approved direction and downstream actions.
- Evaluate field discoveries and technical defects, establish containment and corrective action, and verify that approved resolutions are implemented across affected vehicles and documents.
- Support OEM and retrofit configuration alignment by applying validated lessons from surveys, prototypes, and production installations.
Documentation, configuration, and change control- Own technical review and release coordination for installation guides, engineering drawings, BOMs, technical bulletins, configuration records, and related deliverables.
- Perform quality reviews for technical accuracy, revision alignment, usability, completeness, and consistency before information is released to the customer or field teams.
- Lead or support Engineering Change Order reviews, technical impact analysis, required approvals, and coordinated updates to drawings, BOMs, guides, work instructions, and affected configurations.
- Own the technical intake and disposition of urgent parts requests and BOM-change requests; confirm technical suitability, obtain required engineering approvals, and release controlled revisions before field use.
- Translate survey, dry-fit, prototype, and field feedback into repeatable approved installation instructions before scaled deployment.
- Develop standard work, review checklists, approval workflows, naming conventions, and controlled repositories to reduce single-person dependency and preserve program knowledge.
Technical stakeholder leadership- Serve as Safe Fleet's technical project contact during engineering reviews, readiness meetings, field investigations, demonstrations, and customer approval activities.
- Explain technical decisions, alternatives, constraints, and risks clearly to customer, project, field, and leadership audiences.
- Facilitate rapid technical triage while maintaining engineering authority, change control, documentation, and safety requirements.
- Participate in the defined after-hours coverage rotation as the technical escalation owner and document decisions for the Project Manager and next-shift handoff.
- Provide technical coaching and knowledge transfer to installers, field leads, support personnel, and designated backup resources.
New York Pay Transparency: $125,000 - $145,000 USD Annual
Requirements- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, systems, manufacturing, or engineering technology; equivalent relevant technical experience may be considered.
- Five or more years of experience leading technical delivery in vehicle systems, transportation, systems integration, manufacturing, engineering, or field implementation.
- Working knowledge of electromechanical vehicle installations, technical drawings, BOMs, configuration management, installation documentation, and engineering change control.
- Experience coordinating engineers, technical writers, suppliers, production personnel, installers, field-service teams, and customer technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to plan technical work, manage dependencies and risks, document decisions, communicate schedule impacts, and drive technical actions to closure.
- Strong technical writing, review, troubleshooting, facilitation, and customer communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and collaboration/document-control tools; ability to learn or use Jira, Confluence, SharePoint/OneDrive, Salesforce, and Arena.
- Valid driver's license, ability to satisfy applicable site-access requirements, and ability to travel and work flexible shifts at customer and field locations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Experience with public transportation agencies, vehicle retrofits, onboard video, communications systems, or multi-vehicle equipment rollouts.
- Project-management certification or demonstrated formal project-management training.
- Experience with requirements traceability, prototype validation, customer acceptance, quality gates, and production-readiness reviews.
- Professional Engineer license or advanced engineering credential.
