About the RoleAs a Tech Lead Manager you'll lead a small team of engineers while staying deeply hands-on in the code. You'll report directly to the Director of Engineering, owning both the technical direction of your team and the growth of the people on it.
This is not a role where you hand off the hard problems. We expect you to hold the same technical bar as our senior engineers - roughly half of your week will go into writing and reviewing production code. The other half goes into hiring, developing people, setting direction, and deciding what good looks like.
You'll start by leading a team of 3-5 engineers who own our agentic automation in carrier expansion, and you'll work with leadership over time to expand that scope.
This is an in-person role based in San Francisco, with the expectation of being in the office 4+ days per week.
What You'll Do- Set the technical direction for your team.
- Grow the engineers on your team by setting clear expectations, running one-on-ones, writing performance reviews, and giving direct feedback early rather than late.
- Define what good looks like on your team, and address it when the work falls short.
- Own the reliability of what your team ships, including production oncall and incident response.
- Work cross-functionally with product, design, and sales to understand requirements and ship thoughtful solutions.
- Build and ship the AI harness: the data pipelines, schemas, validation, and feedback loops that let agents do work reliably at scale.
- Start from the outcome, not the process: curate the harness, data, and success criteria instead of the specific logic, then let agents write and validate it against real data.
- Write high-quality code optimized for extensibility, working across component boundaries from frontend to backend, infrastructure, and our AI stack.
- Engage in code reviews to maintain a high bar of engineering excellence.
About You- 4+ years of software engineering experience, and you can still operate at the level of a senior engineer today.
- Experience with TypeScript and tools such as GraphQL, Relay, React, and Node.js.
- Experience working at early-stage companies where you shipped products end-to-end and wore many hats.
- Excited to build with AI and apply it to real customer problems. No prior AI or machine learning background is required; you will learn our AI stack here.
- At least two years of experience managing engineers, either in your current role or a previous one.
- A track record of growing engineers and raising the bar of a team.
Under the Hood- Infrastructure: AWS, CDK, Fargate ECS
- Backend: TypeScript, Node.js, Prisma, NestJS, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Redis, Elasticsearch, GraphQL
- Frontend: TypeScript, React, Relay, Ant Design, Vite, GraphQL
- AI: LLMs, prompt engineering, agentic workflows, and Loop's internal AI platform
