About the Role

We are seeking a highly technical Tax Director with deep expertise in partnership and real estate taxation to join our Kansas City tax practice. This role will oversee complex tax planning, advising, compliance, and research services. You'll advise clients on sophisticated tax matters and serve as a technical resource for clients and internal teams. You'll work closely with firm leadership to deliver exceptional client service, strengthen technical excellence, and develop future leaders within the practice.

What You'll Do

Partnership & Real Estate Tax
  • Lead complex tax planning, consulting, and compliance engagements for partnerships, real estate entities, investment funds, family offices, and closely held businesses.
  • Serve as the firm's technical resource on sophisticated partnership taxation matters.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight related to complex tax matters including but not limited to:
    • IRC Section 704(c) allocations
    • IRC Section 754 elections and basis adjustments
    • Partnership waterfalls
    • Tiered partnership structures
    • Investor funds
    • Real estate investment partnerships
    • REIT taxation
    • Complex entity structuring and transactions
  • Research, analyze, and develop solutions for complex tax issues and transactions.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and communicate relevant implications to clients and team members.
  • Present and defend technical tax positions to clients, taxing authorities, and stakeholders.

Client Advisory & Relationship Management
  • Serve as a trusted advisor by delivering proactive tax planning, strategic guidance, responsive service, and proactive advice that supports client objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to expand service offerings within existing client relationships.
  • Collaborate with partners and firm leaders to provide comprehensive solutions that support client objectives.
  • Assist clients with federal and state tax examinations and controversy matters.

Engagement Leadership & Practice Management
  • Oversee planning, staffing, execution, and delivery across multiple client engagements.
  • Manage budgets, timelines, and client expectations while maintaining high-quality service delivery.
  • Approve final engagement conclusions and recommendations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve service delivery, engagement efficiency, and operational effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with leadership on resource planning and capacity management across the tax practice.

Leadership & Talent Development
  • Provide overall leadership, supervision, coaching, and performance feedback to managers, supervisors, and seniors.
  • Serve as a mentor and technical resource to team members across all levels of the organization.
  • Foster a collaborative culture focused on accountability, continuous learning, and professional growth.
  • Help develop future leaders through ongoing coaching, technical development, and career planning discussions.
