MMB Solutions LLC | Dayton, OhioPosition Type: Full-Time
Location: Dayton
Compensation: $160,000-$165,000 annually, depending on qualifications
Security Clearance: Active U.S. security clearance preferred; ability to meet applicable government clearance and access requirements
The OpportunityWe're looking for a
Systems Engineer II to join our Dayton-area team supporting advanced research and development for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).
You'll contribute to MOSAIC (Multi-domain Operations Simulation, Architecture, Integration, and Convergence), a research program focused on making complex test, experimentation, and training environments more intelligent, adaptable, and easier to configure.
At the center of this effort is
Axioma, MMB's software platform for managing distributed resources, integrating data and control flows, orchestrating software and infrastructure, and supporting AI-assisted experimentation.
Our goal is to make it possible for researchers to describe what they want to accomplish and have the environment help determine what resources are available, how they fit together, and how to configure and operate them.
This position isn't about maintaining a static system or following a predetermined checklist. You'll help design, build, integrate, and evaluate new capabilities-working alongside a multidisciplinary team that values practical solutions, technical curiosity, and forward progress.
What You'll Be Working OnSystems architecture and engineering - Help design and evolve architectures connecting cloud infrastructure, communications systems, simulation environments, data pipelines, AI/ML capabilities, and external hardware.
- Translate research objectives into technical requirements, interfaces, system designs, and working implementations.
- Develop and maintain systems engineering artifacts, architecture models, interface definitions, and technical documentation that support development rather than slow it down.
- Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) concepts, including SysML and DoDAF approaches, to describe systems, their relationships, and how they're expected to behave.
- Evaluate design alternatives, identify integration challenges, and work with the team to develop practical solutions.
Software-defined infrastructure and integration - Work with Kubernetes-based environments, containerized applications, distributed computing resources, and supporting infrastructure.
- Help integrate services, APIs, resource adapters, and orchestration capabilities into the Axioma ecosystem.
- Connect software platforms with simulation tools, communications systems, network infrastructure, telemetry sources, and physical test resources.
- Support automation of environment configuration, deployment, observability, and system management.
- Contribute to the integration of high-performance computing, GPU-enabled resources, and cloud-native services.
AI-assisted experimentation and intelligent orchestration - Help develop and evaluate approaches for turning researcher objectives into structured, executable experiments.
- Explore how AI can assist with identifying resources, selecting tools, configuring environments, and interpreting system behavior.
- Support the integration of AI agents and structured tool interfaces, including MCP-compatible approaches, within controlled and observable workflows.
- Help establish methods for capturing system state, configurations, data relationships, and experiment results so research can be reproduced and evaluated.
- Evaluate where automation adds value, where human approval is needed, and how to make these interactions practical for researchers and operators.
Testing, experimentation, and delivery - Participate in software-based, simulated, laboratory, and operationally representative experimentation.
- Develop test procedures, integration demonstrations, verification methods, and performance assessments.
- Troubleshoot integration issues across software, networks, infrastructure, and system interfaces.
- Work directly with researchers and fellow engineers to understand what is needed, prototype solutions, and rapidly incorporate feedback.
- Help turn lessons learned into better architectures, reusable capabilities, and working software.
What We're Looking ForWe're looking for an engineer who has a solid technical foundation, enjoys learning new technologies, and is comfortable working on problems that don't always have an obvious solution.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Approximately 3-7 years of relevant engineering experience. We're flexible on years if your technical capabilities and demonstrated work speak for themselves.
- Experience with systems engineering, software-intensive system development, systems integration, or technical architecture.
- Working knowledge of Linux, networking, APIs, distributed systems, or cloud-native application environments.
- Familiarity with scripting or software development using languages such as Python, Go, Java, or similar.
- Ability to understand technical requirements, communicate design decisions, and work across engineering disciplines.
- Experience troubleshooting complex technical problems and delivering functional solutions.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to meet applicable government security and facility-access requirements.
Experience that would be especially usefulYou don't need to check every box. We're interested in engineers who bring strengths in some of these areas and are motivated to learn the rest.
- Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, Ansible, or infrastructure automation.
- Model-Based Systems Engineering, SysML, DoDAF, or architecture modeling tools.
- AI/ML integration, agent-based systems, MCP, or automated workflows.
- Kafka, MQTT, OpenTelemetry, or distributed data pipelines.
- Modeling and simulation, DIS/HLA, or Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) environments.
- Software-defined networking, SDR, RF communications, or 5G/6G systems.
- High-performance computing, virtualization, distributed compute, or GPU infrastructure.
- Experience supporting AFRL, DoD research, or advanced defense technology programs.
- Current Secret or Top Secret security clearance.
How We WorkWe're a relatively small team working on ambitious technical problems, and that shapes our culture.
We build, test, and improve. We favor working prototypes, meaningful demonstrations, and iterative development over months of documentation that never turns into a functioning capability.
We encourage creative engineering. Good ideas can come from anywhere. We want engineers who ask why something is done a certain way, suggest better approaches, and are willing to explore them.
We move with purpose. Speed matters, but so does sound engineering. Our goal is to make informed decisions, move quickly, and produce capabilities that work.
We value ownership. You'll have opportunities to influence technical direction, make design decisions, and see the results of your work. We expect people to communicate openly, follow through on commitments, and help their teammates succeed.
We don't expect everyone to know everything. Our work crosses a lot of technical disciplines. Curiosity, adaptability, and the willingness to learn are just as important as existing expertise.
Why Join MMB?At MMB, you won't be limited to a narrow engineering function or disconnected from the systems you're helping develop.
You'll have the opportunity to work on emerging technologies, contribute directly to software and system architecture, collaborate with AFRL researchers, and help develop capabilities that are genuinely new.
We're looking for engineers who want more than a seat on a contract-people who want to build something, take pride in their work, and have a meaningful influence on the technology and the team around them.
If that sounds like the kind of environment where you'd do your best work, we'd like to hear from you.
