Full Job Description
The Accounting Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and performing account reconciliations, journal entries, financial close activities, and variance analysis for government programs, fully insured, self-insured, and other assigned healthcare accounting functions. This role ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, compliance with accounting policies and internal controls, and effective resolution of accounting and operational issues. The Accounting Supervisor also leads and develops accounting staff and partners across the organization to support audits, process improvements, system initiatives, and business needs. What You'll Do • Prepare and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting activities for assigned receivable, payable, premium, surcharge, and other general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely reporting. • Prepare as well as review account reconciliations, journal entries, variance analyses, and supporting schedules prepared by team members for government programs, fully insured, self-insured, and other assigned accounting areas. • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies, aged reconciling items, and complex account balance issues, coordinating corrective actions with appropriate business partners. • Monitor key financial and operational data, perform control checks, and validate that transactions are accurately recorded in the general ledger. • Ensure assigned accounting processes comply with company policies, internal controls, documentation standards, and applicable accounting and regulatory requirements. • Support internal and external audits by coordinating responses, reviewing supporting documentation, addressing control questions, and ensuring requested information is complete and provided timely. • Partner with Actuarial, Membership and Billing, Financial Systems, Information Technology, Operations, and other areas to resolve accounting matters and support organizational initiatives. • Review and approve accounting process documentation, narratives, flowcharts, and procedures to ensure processes, responsibilities, systems, and data dependencies are accurately reflected. • Participate in system implementations, process transformation efforts, testing, automation, and other initiatives that affect accounting operations or financial reporting. • Lead, coach, and develop accounting staff through training, performance feedback, workload management, cross-training, and ongoing support. • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, accuracy, strong internal controls, and continuous improvement. What You Bring Education/Experience: • High School Diploma/GED required. • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or advanced degree preferred. • 7+ years of progressive accounting or financial reporting experience, including responsibility for account reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close, and financial analysis. • Experience leading and managing an accounting or finance team, including assigning work, reviewing deliverables, coaching employees, and managing performance. • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial controls, general ledger processes, and financial reporting requirements. Additional Licensing, Certifications, Registrations: • CPA or other accounting specific financial certifications preferred. Knowledge: • Requires in depth knowledge of general accounting principles and methods; prefer knowledge of both Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Statutory Accounting principles (SAP). • Demonstrated strong knowledge of accounting standards and adheres to policies and regulations, technical review process, and consequences of non-compliance to monitor and reinforce quality assurance. • Experience supporting internal and external audits and working within a controlled financial environment. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to partner effectively with cross-functional departments and all levels of management. • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with financial systems and reporting tools. • Healthcare, insurance, or managed care industry experience preferred. • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement Skills and Abilities: • Supervision and team leadership skills. • Excellent communication skills (Written and oral) with proven ability to develop relationships with internal customers, peers to guide and assist as needed. • Accountability. • Proficiency with audits. • Managing processes with strong analytical skills, business acumen and problem-solving skills. • Research skills. • Quality and project management. • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy and the ability to complete tasks with minimal oversight. • Time management and ability to prioritize to meet multiple deadlines. • Experience performing financial and ad hoc analyses using advanced Excel functionality. Salary Range: $97,800 - $133,455 ​This compensation range is specific to the job level and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity.  This range has been created in good faith based on information known to Horizon at the time of posting.  Compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case.
