Position SummaryThe Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and improvement of all district facilities and grounds. The successful candidate will lead and supervise custodial and maintenance staff, manage capital and maintenance projects from planning through completion, and ensure that district facilities meet all health, safety, and regulatory requirements. This role requires strong managerial skills, hands-on trade knowledge, and the ability to respond calmly and effectively to facility emergencies.
Responsibilities- Supervise, schedule, train, and evaluate custodial and maintenance staff, fostering a culture of professionalism, accountability, and teamwork
- Oversee the daily cleaning, maintenance, and repair of the school building, athletic facilities, and grounds
- Serve as project lead for capital improvement, renovation, and maintenance projects, coordinating with architects, engineers, contractors, and vendors to keep work on schedule and within budget
- Develop and manage preventive maintenance programs for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, mechanical, and life-safety systems
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including NJ PEOSH, AHERA, Right-to-Know, fire and building codes, and ADA requirements
- Assist in developing and monitoring the facilities budget and long-range facilities plan
- Obtain quotes, prepare specifications, and oversee purchasing in accordance with New Jersey public school contracts law
- Coordinate building use and facility requests for school and community events
- Maintain accurate records of work orders, inspections, inventories, and regulatory reports
- Collaborate with administrators, staff, and community partners to support a safe and positive school environment
- Respond to facility emergencies on nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Business Administrator
Qualifications- Significant experience in building operations and facilities management, preferably in a school or public-sector setting
- Demonstrated supervisory and managerial experience
- Proven experience serving as project lead on construction, renovation, or capital improvement projects
- Hands-on trade experience in one or more areas such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or general building maintenance
- New Jersey Black Seal Low Pressure Boiler License preferred, or the ability to obtain one
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a personable and service-oriented approach
- Working knowledge of school facility regulations and safety standards preferred
- Proficiency with computer-based work order and maintenance management systems
- Valid driver's license
Work ScheduleThis is a 12 month position. The Supervisor must be available on call for emergencies during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
