Description
The Supervising Psychologist is a clinical and training role within Counseling Services, operating under the clinical and administrative direction of the Associate Director and Director of Counseling. This position is central to the Center's mission, providing time-sensitive, brief individual therapy, group counseling, and high-level crisis intervention to the diverse student community.

A primary function of this role is to serve as a core member of the Training Program, providing direct clinical supervision and didactic training to unpaid predoctoral externs. The Supervising Psychologist also actively contributes to the Center's outreach and consultation services. This is a 12-month position.

The Supervising Psychologist balances clinical care with training and consultation responsibilities.
Clinical Services and Crisis Management (50%)

• Brief Individual Therapy: Conduct comprehensive intake assessments and provide time-sensitive, brief, and evidence-based individual therapy to students presenting with a wide range of psychological and emotional concerns. Triage cases and make appropriate referrals to internal and external resources.
• Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate and high-level crisis intervention for students experiencing acute psychological distress or risk (e.g., suicidality, severe trauma). Participate in the on-call crisis rotation and follow up as necessary.
• Group Counseling: Facilitate a diverse range of psychoeducational workshops and focused support and therapy groups relevant to student needs (e.g., anxiety management, grief, relationships, identity-focused support).
• Case Management: Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential clinical records in accordance with professional, ethical, and legal standards.
• Clinical Consultation: Provide emergency consultation to students, faculty, staff, and parents regarding psychological concerns and risk management.

Training and Supervision (30%)

• Clinical Supervision: Provide individual and/or group clinical supervision to Counseling Services training staff (e.g., pre-doctoral externs, post-doctoral fellows) in accordance with APA guidelines and Center policies.
• Didactic Training: Develop and conduct didactic seminars, presentations, and specialized trainings for the entire clinical staff, focusing on areas of expertise (e.g., trauma-informed care, brief therapy models, cultural competence).
• Program Development: Participate actively in the evaluation and ongoing development of the training program, including selecting, interviewing, and orienting future training candidates.
• Mentorship: Serve as a mentor to early-career clinicians, modeling ethical practice and professional development.

Outreach and Community Engagement (20%)

• Campus Collaboration: Participate in the Integrated Health and Wellbeing Center's collaborative efforts to promote a holistic model of student wellness in partnership with Health Services and Health Promotion.
• Outreach Programming: Design and deliver outreach programs and workshops focused on mental health literacy, resilience, and specific student needs (e.g., working with artists/designers, international students, LGBTQ+ communities).
• Staff Training: Participate in major institutional training events, including New Student Orientation and Residential Life Staff Training.
• Assessment & Evaluation: Contribute to the collection, analysis, and reporting of counseling center usage data and service delivery evaluations to support continuous quality improvement and strategic planning.

Qualifications

Education & Licensure

• Education: Doctorate (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited program is required.
• Internship: Completion of an APA-accredited internship (or an APPIC-registered internship that meets APA guidelines) is required.
• Licensure: Current, unrestricted license to practice Psychology in the State of New York is required.

Experience & Skills

• Clinical Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of full-time, post-licensure clinical experience.
• College Counseling Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of prior clinical experience working in a college or university counseling center is required.
• Supervisory Experience: Demonstrated experience and formal training in clinical supervision of graduate-level trainees (externs, interns, or post-docs) is required.
• Clinical Specializations: Demonstrated expertise and professional interest in one or more areas relevant to a diverse college population, such as: trauma/sexual assault, substance use/harm reduction, men's mental health, LGBTQ+ issues, identity development, or the unique needs of artists/designers.
• Core Competencies: Demonstrated excellence in brief therapy models, crisis management, cultural humility, and the ability to effectively collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.
