ABOUT THE ROLE The
Superintendent Electrical & Instrumentation Maintenance leadw the safe, reliable, and efficient maintenance of electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems across our fixed plant and mobile fleet operations. This leadership role is critical to ensuring asset reliability, operational readiness, and safe production while building a high-performing maintenance culture aligned with South32's values and standards. This role is based at the Hermosa Project Site, near Patagonia, Arizona.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren't limited to:
Health, Safety & Environment- Provide visible safety leadership across all electrical, instrumentation, and automation maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with South32 HSE standards, electrical safety requirements, isolation and permit systems, and statutory obligations.
- Ensure material risk critical controls related to electrical energy, automation systems, and control equipment that are implemented, verified, and effective.
- Lead incident investigations and corrective actions related to E&I systems and automation failures.
Electrical & Instrumentation Maintenance Execution- Lead the execution of electrical and instrumentation maintenance for fixed plant, infrastructure, and mobile equipment.
- Ensure planned and unplanned work is executed safely, efficiently, and to the required technical standards.
- Maintain asset availability and reliability through effective defect management, fault response, and maintenance execution.
- Ensure effective coordination between mobile fleet and fixed plant E&I activities.
Mobile Fleet Electrical Systems- Own maintenance execution for mobile fleet electrical, electronic, and onboard control systems.
- Ensure effective maintenance of fleet automation, onboard diagnostics, communication systems, and safety critical controls.
- Partner with OEMs and Maintenance Engineering to resolve repeat electrical and automation failures.
- Support commissioning, ramp up, and lifecycle management of mobile fleet electrical systems.
Plant Automation & Control Systems- Lead maintenance execution for plant automation, control systems, PLCs, SCADA, instrumentation, and field devices.
- Ensure control system availability, integrity, and performance to support safe and stable operations.
- Support commissioning, testing, and handover of automation systems for new or modified plant.
- Coordinate with IT/OT and Maintenance Engineering to ensure cyber, system, and configuration integrity.
Planning, Coordination & Performance- Work closely with Planning & Scheduling to develop executable work plans and maintenance schedules.
- Manage maintenance backlog, schedule compliance, and resource utilization within the E&I function.
- Monitor and manage performance against agreed KPIs including safety, availability, reliability, and cost.
- Ensure effective integration with operations to minimize production impacts.
People & Capability- Lead, coach, and develop E&I supervisors, trades, and technicians.
- Ensure appropriate competency, authorizations, and training are in place for electrical, instrumentation, and automation work.
- Foster a disciplined, inclusive, and improvement focused culture aligned with South32 values.
ABOUT YOU - Electrical or Instrumentation Trade Qualification.
- Electrical License or equivalent statutory qualification.
- 8+ years of experience in mining, mineral processing, or heavy industrial operations.
- 3+ years of experience in a supervisory, superintendent, or equivalent E&I leadership role.
- Extensive experience in electrical and instrumentation maintenance within mining, processing, or heavy industrial environments
- Strong knowledge of mobile fleet electrical systems and onboard automation
- Demonstrated experience maintaining plant automation, PLC, SCADA, and instrumentation systems
- Experience supporting commissioning and operational readiness activities
- Working knowledge of maintenance management systems (e.g. SAP PM)
- Strong contractor management and stakeholder engagement capability
- Additional automation or control system training preferred
