Overview
MSA Professional Services is seeking a Structural Engineer – Bridges to join our team in Champaign, Illinois. This role is an opportunity for an experienced structural engineer to lead technical design and contribute to bridge replacement, rehabilitation, and transportation structure projects throughout Illinois and the Midwest.
You’ll apply your structural engineering expertise across the planning, design, and construction phases of projects while working closely with Project Managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams. The role also provides opportunities to mentor developing engineers, participate in client relationships, and take increasing ownership of technical project delivery.
Responsibilities
Bridge Design & Technical Leadership
- Lead structural analysis and design for bridge replacement, rehabilitation, and other transportation structure projects
- Perform and review engineering calculations, plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical reports, and construction documents
- Apply applicable design standards and engineering judgment to develop practical, constructible solutions and ensure quality throughout project delivery
- Lead field investigations and provide technical support during construction, including addressing design and construction challenges
Project Delivery
- Lead assigned project components with minimal oversight while maintaining responsibility for technical quality, scope, schedule, and budget
- Coordinate the work of engineers, designers, and technical staff to deliver consistent, high-quality project documents
- Proactively identify technical or project challenges and collaborate with Project Managers and team members to develop solutions
- Support QA/QC processes and review technical work completed by junior staff
Client & Team Collaboration
- Communicate directly with clients, agencies, contractors, and other project stakeholders to coordinate deliverables and resolve technical issues
- Participate in and lead project meetings, presenting technical information and representing MSA professionally
- Mentor developing engineers through technical guidance, work review, and ongoing feedback
- Contribute to proposals, client development, and opportunities to expand MSA’s bridge and structural work
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field from an ABET-accredited program required
- Structural engineering emphasis preferred
Experience
- 4+ years of relevant post-graduate structural engineering experience
- Bridge design, rehabilitation, inspection, or transportation structures experience strongly preferred
Licensure
- Active Structural Engineer (SE) license in the State of Illinois required
- Additional state licensure may be required based on project assignments
