Job Description:
Storage Engineer – Enterprise Data Center & Cloud Services
GDIT is seeking a Storage Engineer for the Federal Civilian Division to join our outstanding team! You will support a large‑scale, global Cloud and Data Center Services program for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Technology (DT). You will engineer, administer, and optimize enterprise storage platforms across hybrid data center environments, with NetApp ONTAP systems, SAN/NAS architecture, data protection, and storage virtualization. Responsibilities include operational support, storage lifecycle management, modernization, platform engineering, and cross‑domain integration to ensure high availability, performance, and mission readiness for DT workloads.
HOW A STORAGE ENGINEER WILL MAKE AN IMPACT
Storage Engineering & Platform Support:
- Engineer, deploy, configure, and support NetApp ONTAP storage systems, including clusters, volumes, LIFs, SnapMirror/SnapVault, export policies, and performance tuning.
- Administer SAN/NAS environments supporting mission‑critical workloads across geographically dispersed DT data centers.
- Support VMware storage integrations, including vSphere datastore provisioning, VMFS/NFS storage design, storage multipathing, vVols, and performance troubleshooting.
- Develop and maintain Infrastructure‑as‑Code (IaC) and automation for storage provisioning and configuration using tools such as Ansible, PowerShell, and REST APIs.
- Participate in engineering of Platform Services including Converged/Cloud Infrastructure, Data Protection, Monitoring, and Security Infrastructure.
Storage Operations & Service Delivery:
- Support 24x7x365 storage operations in coordination with Enterprise Operations and Site Operations teams, participating in ITIL‑aligned incident, problem, and change management.
- Monitor capacity, performance, replication health, data protection, and storage resiliency across large‑scale NetApp ONTAP environments.
- Assist with migration projects, storage lifecycle refresh, cluster expansions, and re‑platforming initiatives across DT enterprise sites.
- Ensure appropriate storage allocation, right‑sizing, and resource lifecycle management to support availability and demand growth.
Data Protection, Availability & Business Continuity:
- Implement storage security best practices including RBAC, encryption, export controls, secure replication, logging, and auditing.
- Ensure compliance with FedRAMP, NIST RMF, FISMA, and DT security directives.
- Support vulnerability remediation, configuration hardening, and continuous monitoring activities.
Monitoring, Observability & Reporting:
- Work with monitoring platforms to track storage performance, latency, capacity usage, replication status, trends, and forecasting.
- Provide reports and analytical insights to DT leadership, including storage health dashboards, SLA metrics, and lifecycle planning data.
- Integrate storage telemetry with enterprise monitoring, observability, and CMDB systems.
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration:
- Collaborate with engineers across compute, virtualization, networking, cloud, data protection, cybersecurity, and operations to support integrated platform delivery.
- Prepare engineering documentation, runbooks, design diagrams, and knowledge‑transfer materials for Government FTEs and support partners.
- Support special projects, modernization pilots, and new storage service development.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED
Bring your initiative and drive for innovation to GDIT. The Storage Engineer must have:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline required (master’s preferred).
- Experience: 8+ years relevant experience supporting enterprise IT systems, cloud services engineering, or hybrid cloud environments.
- Certification: NetApp Certified Data Administrator – ONTAP (NCDA) or NetApp Certified Implementation Engineer – ONTAP (NCIE) and VMware Certified Professional – Data Center Virtualization (VCP‑DCV) or VMware storage‑focused certification (e.g., vSAN Specialist)
- Technical skills: Expertise in NetApp ONTAP cluster operations, SAN/NAS administration, replication technologies, SnapMirror/SnapVault, and performance troubleshooting. Strong background in VMware storage integration (VMFS, NFS, vVols, datastore capacity planning, multipath optimization). Proficiency in automation and scripting (PowerShell, Python, REST API, Ansible). Familiarity with converged/hyperconverged platforms, storage networking (Fibre Channel/iSCSI), and enterprise monitoring systems. Understanding of STIGs, SRGs, FedRAMP requirements, and federal cybersecurity frameworks.
- Security clearance level: Active Top Secret level clearance
- Location: Hybrid within the National Capital Region with periodic travel to customer and data center sites.
- Timeline: This is a contingent position expected to start in Spring of 2027.
The likely salary range for this position is $140,821 - $190,523. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
