Full Job Description
About the role

The Enphase Modeling and Controls team, part of the Office of the CTO, defines prototypes, and supports next-generation control solutions for Enphase inverter products. The team is an integrated group of highly specialized power electronics, controls, and firmware engineers that is fast-moving, working closely with multi-disciplinary teams across the organization, and looking for motivated individuals that can contribute and collaborate closely with the team to deliver innovative solutions. As a member of the Modeling and Controls team, you will solve some of the most exciting problems in power conversion and help shape and implement the control algorithms that govern the dynamic performance of our inverter products. The team's current focus is Enphase's Solid-State Transformer (SST) development for data center power infrastructure, building on deep experience in residential microinverter and battery inverter controls.

The Enphase Modeling and Controls team is seeking a Staff Firmware Engineer to develop, integrate, and validate the inverter control firmware at the core of the SST platform.

What you will do
  • Design and implement firmware, primarily in C and C++, for real-time operation and control
  • Validate firmware through software simulations, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and prototype
  • bench testing to ensure functionality and performance requirements are met
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Bitbucket Pipelines, including automated builds, static
  • analysis, unit testing, and artifact generation
  • Support power electronics and controls engineers during hardware bring-up by integrating, debugging, and tuning embedded firmware on inverter prototypes
  • Optimize product solutions with firmware/hardware control co-design
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define firmware requirements, interfaces, and integration strategies
  • Mentor junior staff

Who You Are and What You Bring
  • BS/MS/PhD Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • BS and 8+ years / MS and 6+ years / PhD and 3+ years' experience in a similar (non- academic) role as an embedded software or firmware engineer
  • Expert-level C and C++ proficiency, including memory management, linker scripts, bootloader development, and secure boot concepts
  • Strong debugging and systems analysis skills, including diagnosing stack overflows, memory corruption, and hard faults; evaluating CPU utilization; and tuning task priorities to prevent resource contention and system lockups
  • Expertise in bare metal and real-time operating systems, including multithreaded programming and multi-core firmware development
  • Familiarity with ARM Cortex-M4/M7 architecture
  • Knowledge of microcontroller peripherals such as ADC, GPIO, PWM, SPI, and CAN
  • Understanding of digital signal processing concepts and ability to implement them in firmware
  • Experience testing and debugging code and hardware using tools such as J-Link debug probes (SWD), oscilloscopes, and protocol analyzers
  • Proficiency with embedded toolchains and build systems, including GCC, GNU Make, CMake, and Python-based build and automation scripts
  • Experience with containerized build environments using Docker
  • Proficiency with Git version control
  • Ability to take ownership of development tasks and drive them to completion with high quality
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools and workflows, including LLM-integrated coding environments (e.g., Devin, Copilot, or similar)

Desired Skills
  • Zephyr development experience
  • Familiarity with control loops and PID controllers
  • Desktop and embedded Linux experience
  • Familiarity with AC grid simulators and programmable loads

Travel
  • Occasional travel domestically
