What is the Opportunity?

As part of Aecon's growing Nuclear portfolio, the centralized welding team is expanding to support across the sector. This role will be based out of Aecon's Centre of Welding Excellence in Cambridge and will support all major nuclear projects. The Sr. Welding Applications Specialist is a team member whom possess deep understanding of welding technology, codes & standards, welding applications and has extensive experience in the nuclear industry.

Reporting to the Sr. Welding Program Manager, this role will support existing and new nuclear projects along with programmatic Aecon welding initiatives. The primary function of this role is to support Construction and site Welding Teams in the planning, organization, control, trouble shooting, implementation, qualification and successful execution of welding works.

What You'll Do Here:
  • Assist in planning and development of Aecon's technical welding services team to support domestic and international projects
  • Maintain relationship and connection with Aecon's Nuclear Construction leadership and site welding teams. Regular, scheduled site visits are required (SMR, PNGS, BP and USA sites when needed)
  • Domestic and Internation travel is required. Short term (1 week - 1 month) and/or long term (1 month - 3 months) travel for project site support is required on an as-needed basis
  • Remain informed of welding performance metrics on all project sites (ie Weld Failure Rates)
  • Lead trouble shooting efforts for: weld defect resolution, weld process qualification/implementation and weld equipment issues in a timely manner when requested by project sites
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to leadership and customers as necessary to effectively communicate technical execution, problem resolution and other welding related topics
  • Oversee, plan and assist in technical aspects of initiatives undertaken by the construction and welding teams
  • Work with all levels of Aecon and construction/project management teams along with direct field work forces
  • Develop / enhance Aecon's weld procedure library for specialty welding processes and applications
  • Manage, implement, and provide technical guidance to execute procedure qualification records using ASME, CWB and/or AWS welding codes.
  • Review code of construction and customer technical requirements to provide technical solutions for welding execution and development activities
  • Coordinate mechanical testing of PQRs, WPSs, WPQ and WMQs with local labs
  • Coordinate with Vendors to ensure timely and robust Non-Destructive Examination schedules required by the Project Specification and applicable Welding Codes and Standards
  • Review and produce technical documentation (WPS, ATS, Weld Sequencing Plans etc.) in relation to construction and welding fabrication
  • Maintain relationships with welding consumable and welding equipment vendors
  • Specify and recommend welding equipment and technology for new and existing applications
  • Liaise with Aecon's Welding Center of Excellence as needed to support on-site installation welding activities
  • Make recommendations for continuous improvement of welding innovation at Aecon Nuclear
  • As needed, provides and ensures effectiveness of the liaison function between the designer and construction teams in terms of information flow and problem resolution
  • ALWAYS maintain highest standard of final product quality


What You Bring To The Team
  • 15+ years of experience in welding within nuclear construction environment.
  • 5+ years of supervisory or management experience
  • Red seal trades certification is an asset
  • Post secondary education in a Welding Technology or equivalent (ie. 3 year college diploma in Welding Technology)
  • Expert at conventional welding processes & principles (ie. SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, SAW etc.)
  • Expert at fitting and preparation of weld joints (plate and pipe)
  • Expert at weld development initiatives such as PQR, PPQ and Mockup testing
  • Expert ability to operate and program specialty welding equipment (ie. Lincoln, Liburdi, AMI, Polysoude)
  • Strong understanding of ASME, CWB and AWS welding codes
  • Strong understanding metallurgical analysis, techniques, and technical report reviews
  • Strong understanding of NDE evaluation techniques and weld defect resolution
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) with clients, executives and large teams
  • Experience working under a Nuclear Quality Program preferred, N286 & N299 standards
  • Organizational and time management skills. Ability to prioritize and multi-task / service orientated
  • Thrives in a fast-paced decision making environment
  • Proven leadership in field or project setting
  • Ability to travel internationally on short notice

Salary range: $120,000 -$140,000

Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
