Job SummaryMurphy Oil Corporation is seeking a Senior Staff Riser Engineer to provide senior technical leadership and hands-on engineering support for deepwater riser, pipeline, mooring, floating facility, and offshore structural systems. The role requires a distinctive combination of offshore engineering expertise and advanced capability in computing, instrumentation, data transmission, and engineering data analysis.
The successful candidate will serve as a subject matter expert supporting offshore operations, subsea integrity management, life extension, fitness-for-service assessments, brownfield modifications, monitoring systems, and capital projects. The position will connect design-basis engineering with field-measured data to identify anomalies, quantify integrity risk, and develop practical recommendations for safe and reliable operations.
This role will work from the Houston Corporate office with periodic travel to offshore facilities, fabrication sites, contractor offices, and regulatory or technical meetings as required.
Responsibilities- Provide technical leadership for offshore riser, pipeline, mooring, platform, and structural systems throughout their life cycle.
- Lead and review engineering analyses for riser, flowline, and mooring systems.
- Manage offshore monitoring systems, instrumentation, data transmission, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Analyze monitoring and operating data to support integrity and operational decisions.
- Lead fatigue, remaining-life, fitness-for-service, and related engineering assessments.
- Support offshore operations, integrity management, inspections, anomaly resolution, and risk-based maintenance.
- Develop scopes and specifications, support bidding, and manage contractors and vendors.
- Coordinate technical interfaces across internal teams, contractors, regulators, and offshore personnel.
- Review and approve engineering designs, analyses, procedures, records, and regulatory documents.
- Mentor technical staff and promote consistent practices and continuous improvement.
- Clearly communicate technical findings, risks, and recommendations to all stakeholders.
Licenses / Certifications- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas, or ability to obtain Texas PE licensure through comity.
- Willing and able to complete required offshore safety and survival training, including HUET, and to travel offshore when needed.
Qualifications / Requirements- Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- 20+ years of progressive offshore oil and gas engineering experience, including responsibility for deepwater risers, moorings, floating facilities, pipelines, subsea, or marine systems.
- Expertise across multiple riser types, including SCRs, hybrid, flexible, top-tensioned, and umbilicals.
- Deep knowledge of floating production and marine systems, including spars, semi-submersibles, TLPs, FPSOs, hulls, moorings, motions, station keeping, stability, and structural behavior.
- Working knowledge of BSEE requirements and applicable API, DNV, ABS, ASME, BS 7910, and industry practices.
- Experience with an operator, engineering contractor, designer, or independent verifier; CVA or third-party verification experience preferred.
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary work, manage contractors and interfaces, review complex analyses, and make sound recommendations under operational constraints.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including defensible technical documentation and presentations to management, regulators, and specialists.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience combining first-principles offshore engineering judgment with practical operating experience and strong computing skills.
- Strong preference for ability to connect riser, mooring, marine, and structural behavior with instrumentation architecture, reliable data transmission, software-enabled workflows, and rigorous data analysis.
The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
