Full Job Description

An experienced, energetic Sr. Solution Train Engineer (STE) is needed to support Solution Train and Agile Release Train (ART) operations for a large mission-critical program using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). The program includes one Solution Train and multiple ARTs. The selected individual will support the Release Train Engineers (RTEs) in monitoring performance, managing change, resolving impediments, and driving continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will bring significant experience leading agile teams and be prepared to step into a Solution Train Engineer leadership role on a large, complex program with demanding interface, performance, and security requirements. Strong communication skills, flexibility, and persistence are essential. Program execution follows DevOps best practices and uses mature development, test, and production environments. The program uses Behavior Driven Development (BDD) and test automation tools alongside a full suite of team collaboration tools. Leidos is the prime contractor providing systems engineering, development, test, integration, and operational support. The program focuses on introducing new technology and advanced capabilities while sustaining an ongoing mission and operational system.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Solution Train and ART operations across Solution Train and ARTs.

  • Work with SAFe governance stakeholders on program execution.

  • Support work allocation and resource assignment across ARTs.

  • Monitor performance, remove impediments, and drive improvement.

  • Coordinate schedules and program-wide software and architecture releases.

  • Lead PI Planning, including logistics and technical preparation.

  • Lead Solution Train planning events and pre- and post-planning meetings.

  • Facilitate cross-team collaboration through Scrum of Scrums and related forums.

  • Track feature and capability execution through program metrics.

  • Brief customers on progress, testing, deployment, and release readiness.

  • Assess skill needs and support staffing actions with leadership.

  • Provide input on resourcing to address critical bottlenecks.

  • Coach teams, Scrum Masters, Product Owners, and leaders in agile practices.

  • Promote teamwork to achieve PI goals.

  • Guide teams toward greater agile maturity.

  • Support Communities of Practice and Built-In Quality practices.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 12 years of relevant experience. A degree is required (preferably in a technical field). Additional relevant experience may be substituted for a degree.

  • At least 7 years of experience leading teams or projects.

  • At least 5 years of experience supporting large software development, systems, integration, and test efforts.

  • Demonstrated work experience as a Scrum Master.

  • Demonstrated work experience as a Release Train Engineer or Solution Train Engineer.

  • Demonstrated work experience applying SAFe and executing PI Planning.

  • Experience with agile tools such as Jira, VersionOne, Rally, or IBM ELM.

  • Ability to explain technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Experience working on agile software teams.

  • Experience working with external stakeholders, including government representatives.

  • Experience briefing leadership and customers on status and progress.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong time management and issue triage skills, and strong attention to detail and task completion.

  • Clearance Required: Must have TS/SCI with Polygraph.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as a Solution Train Engineer.

  • Significant experience in software development, test, or systems engineering.

  • Extensive experience working with multi-disciplinary development teams.

  • Scaled Agile certification, such as SAFe Agilist or SAFe RTE.

  • Experience across the software development lifecycle – as a developer, tester, system engineer, etc.

  • Experience with test automation, test-driven development, continuous integration, and continuous deployment to support Built-In Quality.
