Role Overview

The Cboe FX and U.S. Treasuries Low Latency Engineering team is hiring a Senior Principal Software Engineer.

This position entails building and maintaining reliable high-performance software applications that are part of the Cboe FX trading platform. This role must apply principles and techniques of computer science, engineering, mathematical analysis and problem solving. The Senior Principal Software Engineer will help set technical direction, mentor other engineers, and lead architecture decisions for the platform. This person will also serve as the primary escalation point for operational problems, leading root-cause analysis and driving resolution of critical production issues during on-call periods.

Responsibilities:
  • Code, test, debug, and document technical assignments
  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions, applying business and product knowledge to propose high-level technical and procedural approaches
  • Lead the architecture and design of complex, distributed, latency-sensitive trading systems, delivering high-quality, well-tested solutions and setting technical direction for the team
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to engineers, raising the bar for code quality, testing, and engineering practice
  • Drive cross-team technical decisions and influence the engineering roadmap in partnership with team leadership
  • Document any relevant details in the wiki for a self-sustaining product
  • Evaluate and champion adoption of emerging technologies and AI-powered tools throughout the software development lifecycle (coding, testing, code review, and documentation) to improve efficiency, quality, and engineering velocity


Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or a related field.
  • 15+ years of experience in:
    • Writing highly performant, well-tested, and elegant Java code, with recent, hands-on experience in a real-time trading environment
    • Building and maintaining multithreaded, distributed, real-time trading systems
    • Designing highly distributed, fail-safe systems
  • Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and work cross-functionally with staff in operations and sales
  • Ability to optimize applications/systems for performance
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical design, architecture decisions, and mentoring other engineers
  • Self-directed, self-motivated
  • Preferrable to have 3-5 years' experience with the following:
    • Linux computing environment & some script language
    • Network debug & programming
    • PostgresSQL or other RDBMS
    • Data analysis using R
    • Git or similar version control system
    • Environments running 24x7 applications with limited downtime
    • Knowledge of order handling and protocols such as FIX and market data processing and distribution
    • Finance industry experience/knowledge
    • Small company experience

Salary Ranges (applicable for US locations only)
At Cboe, we are committed to providing a competitive, transparent, and market-informed total rewards program. The anticipated base salary range for this role is $255,000-$330,000, with actual compensation determined by job-related factors such as skills, relevant experience, education, internal alignment, and location.

This role may also be eligible for annual incentive compensation and, where applicable, participation in Cboe's long-term equity programs.
