Full Job Description
The Worldwide Environment team is looking for a Senior Materials Lifecycle Specialist to apply deep technical expertise in materials science and engineering to help Amazon define and implement strategies that measure and mitigate the environmental and social impacts of commodity supply chains and improve their long-term resilience. Your expertise in materials characterization, lifecycle assessment, processing and refining pathways, and regional and geo-political risk analysis will enable you to develop and implement 3-5 year strategic plans that evolve our materials management standards. You will leverage additional technical knowledge of extended producer responsibility, risk- and impact-mitigating standards and certifications used within target commodity supply chains, and broad understanding of materials innovation, recycling chemistry, and circular economy frameworks to advance sustainability.

The ideal candidate will combine deep knowledge of material properties, extraction and processing science, and recovery pathways with strategic thinking to develop and drive best-in-class sustainability strategies for key materials across Amazon's businesses, including sourcing guidance, circular recovery pathways, and supply chain resilience measures. Additionally, they will work with Tech and Science teams to develop advanced tooling (including geospatial and AI-enabled systems) for material impact and risk measurement, design multi-business KPIs, establish data pipelines, and work with internal and 3P partners to develop, pilot, and scale innovative technologies to strengthen our supply chains.

Key job responsibilities

-Serve as a company expert on one or more commodity supply chains, applying materials science and engineering knowledge to assess their environmental impacts and develop business-specific risk and impact mitigation strategies.

-Lead technical analysis and global dissemination of sustainability guidance for commodity sourcing, materials recovery from end-of-life products and infrastructure, and supply chain diversification strategies.

-Develop comprehensive 3-5 year strategic plans grounded in materials science to improve sourcing practices and mitigate supply chain risks and environmental impacts of key commodity sourcing.

-Collaborate with and influence Amazon business units and technical teams to execute strategic plans that result in impact avoidance, risk mitigation, and materials innovation.

-Collaborate with Amazon Tech and Science teams to develop tools for commodity impact and risk measurement, lifecycle assessment, and abatement scenario analysis.

-Design and manage pilots of new material production, processing, and recovery technologies with our businesses and develop the business case for scaling effective approaches.

-Build and maintain deep technical expertise including materials innovation, recycling and recovery chemistry, industry trends, institutional development, external stakeholder and industry coalition priorities, emerging technologies, and sustainability approaches that further risk and impact mitigation within commodity sustainability.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's degree in environmental, chemical, or materials science engineering or related technical field

- Broad knowledge across supply chain traceability, sourcing practices, certifications, regional risks, and environmental tradeoffs

- Experience tracking industry best practices, innovation, and performance benchmarking related to commodity sourcing and/or sustainability

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Master's degree in supply chain, business, engineering, finance or related technical or quantitative field

- 5+ years of experience in a role optimizing sustainability, yield, and/or operations of commodity supply chains at point of origin or processing

- Experience in materials recovery, recycling, or secondary sourcing of raw materials; circular economy frameworks, industrial ecology, and/or reverse logistics

- Experience with supply chain traceability and provenance systems for raw materials
